

Virginia May Powell, 87, of West Lafayette, Ohio, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2011, at Lafayette Pointe Care Center. She was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, on November 8, 1923, the daughter of the late Albert and Mary Ellen (Newell) Countryman. Virginia was proud to be a graduate of Otsego High School. Virginia was employed at Firestone in Coshocton, and at J.J. Newberry’s, and was a long time member of the Nazarene Church in West Lafayette, Ohio. She loved sewing, reading her Bible, gardening, tending to her flower beds, and being with her family. On March 20, 1943, she married the love of her life, Jasper (Hap) Powell, who survives. Also surviving are her children, Mary “Penny” (Kenny) Phillips of Canton, Ohio, George “Bill” (Debbie) Powell of Sullivan, Indiana, and Barbara (David) Babcock of West Lafayette, Ohio; twelve grandchildren, Terry Thornsley, Shelly (Henry) Monti, Jim (Brenda) Phillips, Judy (Willie) Jones, Billy Powell, Heath (Jami) Powell, Tessa (Ryan) Thompson, Joshua (Jill) Hocter, Melissa (Chris) Lauvray, Jessica (Jason) Schrock, Chrissy (Jessie) Hill, Candy Wentz, Brad Babcock and twenty-nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Daisy Cornelius, Violet June Kiser, and her brothers, David (Hazel) Countryman, and Richard Countryman, and many nieces ,nephews, and sisters and brothers-in-law. She was preceded in death by grandson George Phillips, and sisters, Gladys McKnight, and Sandy Pettit. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Given Dawson Funeral Home in Coshocton, Ohio, on Thursday, November 3, 2011, at 11:00am with Lloyd Tenney officiating. Burial will follow in Coshocton Co. Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home on Thursday.
