Quimbo, Dr. Araceli Cauntay, 70, of Costa Mesa, CA, passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her loved ones and entering Heaven on April 11, 2014. She was a courageous warrior in her 5-year battle with cancer, living the last of her days at home under the tender care of her beloved family. Araceli was born in Batangas City, Philippines to Gaudencio and Andrea (Sison) Cauntay on January 25, 1944. After receiving her doctorate in Pediatrics from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila in 1968, she received an opportunity to pursue both her internship and residency at State University-Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. She then married her college sweetheart, Generoso, at Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in Manhattan, NY. The newlyweds moved to Chicago, where she completed a Chief Pediatric residency at Mercy Hospital. Longing for the easier weather to raise their family, the Quimbo family moved to Costa Mesa in 1979, shortly after the birth of their youngest son, Chris. Araceli began her CA medical career at Chapman General Hospital in Orange. She eventually became the first female doctor and pediatrician to join the Yorba Park Medical Group. She was a popular, charismatic pediatrician, maintaining both a very busy practice and the position of Chairman of Pediatrics for St. Joseph's Heritage Medical Group. Retiring from Pediatrics in 2009, her career spanned 42 years with patients at St. Joseph's, Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), Chapman General Hospital and St. Jude Medical Center while garnering several accolades as NCQA Physician Practice Connections - Patient Centered Medical Home and Brides to Excellence Medical Home Recognition in 2012. In her spare time, she loved gardening, reading, shopping, traveling, and movie musicals. She is survived by her dear husband, retired Dr. Generoso Quimbo; her brother, Arturo Cauntay; and her loving children, Dr. Eric Quimbo of Anaheim, Christine Quimbo of Cypress, Jessica Quimbo Steen (Robert) of Costa Mesa and Chris Quimbo of Orange. She is also survived by her 2-year old grandson, Carter and the devoted family bulldog, Bear. A visitation will be held at the Harbor Lawn-Mt. Olive Memorial Park & Mortuary in Costa Mesa on Tuesday, April 15 from 4-8pm, with a rosary from 6-7pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, April 16 at 10am at St. John the Baptist Church in Costa Mesa, with a reception immediately following at Harbor Lawn-Mt. Olive Memorial Park & Mortuary. We will miss her every day, but we will never forget her unconditional love, her easy-going humor, and her joyful spirit.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and wonderful memories. She truly loved being a pediatrician and her patients were as important as family.
There aren't words that can express my feeling of loss, but I am comforted knowing she is without pain and happy in heaven. Mom, you are my hero and I hope to be half the mother that you were to me.

I just found out of Dr. Quimbo's passing and my heart is broke. She was my daughter's pediatrician and my grandchildren's. Dr. Quimbo was so funny and we had a lot of laughs (at my daughter's expense)we would always make late appointments and Dr. would gives us all the time we needed. She was a great doctor and she will be greatly missed. I am sorry I could not have been there to pay my respects to this wonderful woman. My condolences to the family.

We were deeply saddened to learn of Dr. Quimbo's passing & so sorry that we did not find out about her funeral until afterward.

Dr. Quimbo was my children's pediatrician from the time she joined Yorba Park Medical group in 1988 until she retired. When we moved from Orange we continued driving from Corona & later from Lake Elsinore to see our beloved Dr. Quimbo, we couldn't imagine anyone else being their doctor. She took care of my children like they were her own. When my kids had their health crisis she was there for them and gave them her attention and care. My children loved her and did not want to go to any other doctor. Both of my daughters went into nursing and want to provide the type of compassionate care that they received from Dr. Quimbo. She was one of a kind!

To the Quimbo family THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for all the years that you shared you wife & mother with us, we will be eternally grateful. May God be with you to comfort you as you go through this difficult time. May these words & the words of others bring you some comfort now and in the days ahead.

Please accept Deepest Condolences, She was loved by many & will be missed by all that had the honor to have had her in their life!

dr. quimbo you are a saint and will always have a special place in my heart. You prevented a tragedy that would have affected friends and family a devastating loss if you had not entered our sons life and made it possible for his speedy recovery from a life threating illness. I am eternally thankful for you playing a big role in my sons life and his achievements however small or large I have you to thank. God Bless Dr Quimbo and to her wonderful family my sincere and heartfelt condolences.

I was so surprised to hear of Dr. Quimbo's passing. I'm sad I have missed her services also. Dr. Quimbo was my first pediatrician from about 8 months to 10 yrs old. I have nothing but good memories of her and memories of her ALWAYS giving me a lollipop after each visit. I really wish there were more doctors like Dr. Quimbo. You will be missed...

I was too old to have Dr. Quimbo as my pediatrician but my brother had the honor. However, I was (un)lucky enough to admit myself into urgent care one day after tweaking my ankle really bad and Dr. Quimbo comforted and took care of me. She leaves behind a great son (Chris) who is like a brother to me.
