

Dr. Benjamin Jerome Hubbard, 89, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, in Huntington Beach, CA. Born on February 11, 1937, in Tacoma, Washington, Ben lived a life of profound dedication to humanity, boundless compassion and limitless optimism. Among family and friends, he is remembered as being incredibly kind and thoughtful, listening to others without judgment, and being a wise sage. He had immense love for his family and friends, demonstrated continuously through his caring, encouragement, wonderful sense of humor, willingness to listen carefully, and genuine interest in all of our lives.
Ben earned his PhD in Religious Studies at the University of Iowa, and held Master’s degrees in theology and journalism. He was a member of the faculty at California State University-Fullerton for more than 30 years, including 15 years as department chair. He was a respected scholar and a beloved teacher. His areas of expertise included Jewish studies, biblical studies, world religions, and religion and media studies. Among his many honors, he received the CSUF Distinguished Professor Award in 1993, and the John Cronquist Memorial Award as Outstanding University Mentor in 1999. Before joining Cal State Fullerton, Ben taught at St. Jerome’s University in Waterloo, Ontario and at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Teaching was not just Ben's profession, but his calling. A gifted communicator, he found immense joy and fulfillment in guiding young adults as they expanded their knowledge and understanding of the world. He is remembered by colleagues and students for his deep kindness, compassion and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. A prolific writer and thinker, he authored numerous books and scholarly articles, contributing significantly to his field. He was a frequent contributor to the op-ed pages of the Los Angeles TImes, where he once wrote a regular column on religion. Fluent in seven languages, Ben had a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives.
Beyond academia, Ben served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco. His commitment to service extended into his personal life as well; he was an active member of Temple Shir HaMa'alot, where he attended services and Torah study. He even celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at the age of 83 - a testament to his lifelong dedication to learning and spiritual growth. He volunteered his time to many causes - his most recent involvement was as a Hoag Hospital volunteer. He comforted families of patients who were in the Cardiac ICU, and he felt honored to be able to support people at a difficult time in their lives.
Ben embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. He loved tennis, bike riding, swimming in the ocean, basketball, baseball, and walking—an activity he enjoyed daily until the week before his passing. An avid reader and follower of national and international news, he stayed intellectually engaged throughout his life. His optimism and belief in humanity shone brightly; he saw the best in people and believed that good would ultimately triumph over evil.
Ben was deeply empathetic and accepting, with a great respect for all faiths and beliefs. His love for humanity extended to adults, children, animals, and the earth itself. He was saddened by violence and prejudice but remained steadfastly positive, demonstrating kindness through acts of generosity and encouragement. His humor, intelligence, flexibility, and genuine interest in others made him a joy to be around.
Benjamin cherished his family above all else. He is survived by his children; Sue Hubbard Garber, David Hubbard (Tammy), and Cathy Grady; his grandchildren; Sammy (Cindy), Jacob (Robin), Joey, JoAnna (John), and Abigail (Steven); as well as two great-grandchildren, Naomi and Eric. He also leaves behind his beloved sister Linda and her five children. Preceding him in death were his parents Margaret and Benjamin Hubbard; his wife of 50 years, Judy Hubbard; and his in-laws Shirley and Abe Bass.
Benjamin's legacy is one of love, generosity, wisdom, and an enduring belief in the goodness of humanity. He touched countless lives with his warmth and encouragement. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, 5/15/26 at 10:00 am, Harbor Lawn - Mt. Olive Memorial Park and Mortuary, to honor Ben’s extraordinary life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory.
