Biography

Denis A. Long, 72, died peacefully on June 11, 2021, at Hoag Hospital, Newport Beach. He was born July 5, 1948, in Cork, Ireland, the son of James Long and Catherine Long (Healy).

Denis joined the workforce as a glazing apprentice at the age of 14. He was hired and worked for 28 years at Waters Munster Glass, Cork.
In 1968 Denis briefly joined the Irish Army’s Local Defense Force, An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil (FCÁ). It was during this time he met his wife, Tricia Shelly, following an appearance by his brigade on the theater stage at the Cork City Opera House. Denis was smitten by both Tricia and the theater life and together they spent the next 22 years as company members of the Montfort Singers, under the direction of Eileen Nolan.

In 1990, Denis moved with his wife and daughters, Jennifer and Pamela to fulfill a dream of living in America. Denis was a recipient of a permanent resident Visa to the US - part of an immigration measure authored by CA Sen. Berman. One hundred sixty-two countries participated in the first random visa lottery by the INS, in which 20,000 winners were selected randomly by computer.
Following the move, Denis continued his glazing career at G. Lurie & Assoc.’s, where he worked for 14 years as the foreman for then-owners Jack and Gloria Smiley. He eventually left to start his own company and in 2004 S&A Glass and Mirror, Inc., was born. Located in Irvine’s Airport Circle S&A is still a family-owned business and is now managed by his daughters .

Together for 52 years and married for 47, Denis and Tricia lived for 16 years in Ballyvolane, Cork, and 31 years in Costa Mesa, California. He was a longtime, dedicated, and devout member of his parish church of St. John The Baptist, where he served as the Head Usher for over ten years. Denis was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus (KofC) and a continually active member of his council, filling the position of inside and outside guard for many years. He volunteered his time at nearly every event, from setup to tear down and everything in between. Denis could always be counted on for grilling hamburgers or hot dogs, deep-frying fries, serving beers, shopping for supplies, or being the Chair to the crowd favorite Pancake Breakfast for many years, and all while being the Church’s Head Usher. Denis was a part of it all.

The most important thing in Denis’ life, however, next to his God, was his family. He was the consummate family man who cherished his wife, adored his kids, and treasured his grandkids. Denis and Tricia’s love story was the type you see in movies. After 52 years together, he still brought her breakfast each morning and a Diet Coke each night, even calling from the hospital the week he passed and asking his grandsons to “bring your grandma her diet Coke”. His grandkids too just adored their Poppy. Each one had him wrapped around their respective fingers in their own unique way— always knowing exactly who to run to,
when Mom or Gaga said “No!”, and always, strangely, getting exactly what they wanted....every....single....time. The love, dedication, and adoration Denis had for his family was evident in everything he did, every single day. They were the reason he got up every morning and the love that lulled him to sleep every night. He loved and was loved in return.

To Denis’s friends, he was someone they could always count on. The hardest working person you ever will meet, usually first to arrive and last to leave, always there to lend an ear, a hand, or a Coors Light, and the life of many a party. He was a legend, and his legacy leaves shoes bigger than any one person will be able to fill. His charisma and enthusiasm to be an integral part of everything he was involved in were truly admirable. From family to work, parish or friends he leaves a void, and he will be greatly missed.

Denis is predeceased by his parents, brother Derry Long and sister Myra Linehan. He is survived by his wife Tricia; Daughters Jennifer Cortez-Walters and her husband Jesse; Pamela Linares and her husband Luis; Grandchildren Kennedy Cortez, Hannah Walters, Jesse “Mikey” Walters, Kaeden Cortez, Grace Linares, and Skylar Linares; Sisters Catherina Deasy and her husband Barry, Doreen Murphy and her husband Pat; Brothers, Donal Long and his wife Mary, Sean Long, Seamus Long, Micheal Long and his wife Mary and many nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service is being held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on, Thursday, June 17th, at 9:30 am. Private interment to be held at Accession Cemetery, Lake Forest. Donations can be made in Denis’s honor to the SJB Norbertine Sisters at https://bit.ly.
