So thank you, Harold, for enriching our lives in the latter part of your life. We will always hold you in our hearts.


As we grow older and enter into senior citizen territory, I think it is not uncommon for people to settle into maintaining a circle of close friends that is relatively unchanging. Significant change to that circle of friends came into our lives when Kathe introduced us to and later married Harold Katz. Because Harold was, despite his somewhat reserved manner, really quite a guy. It was our privilege to have spent hours upon hours with him and Kathe over the years.

Always smart and at times very funny, Harold shared with us stories of his life and was always a keen observer when discussions rolled around to current affairs, politics—fortunately we all shared similar views—family matters, sports, and any other topic under the sun. Conversations with Harold were always engaging and enjoyable.

We spent time together at his house in Newport Beach, at their house in Irvine, in waterfront walks and dining in restaurants in various beach cities, and, perhaps most memorably, for several years running, during their stay at our house on New Year's eve and New Year's day. It had become a tradition for the four of us and another couple, our dear friends Marilyn and David, to get together for a festive dinner at our house, followed by two or three hours of playing board-type games, some competitive, but mostly the kind that would provoke funny responses that would make us all roar with laughter. Harold certainly contributed his fair share of the hilarity. Surprisingly, despite the old fogies we all are, it was never difficult to stay awake till midnight and count down as we watched the ball drop in Times Square, then top off the evening with kisses and a champagne toast.

It would be too late for Kathe and Harold to drive back home, so they slept over in our guest room and the party would continue the next morning. Breakfast usually comprised of something special, like Marlene's crème brulé French toast, and conversation would go on for another hour or two before it (continued)
