June 25, 1924 to August 9, 2018
Homer Bernard Chernin, of Mission Viejo, CA, died peacefully at home on August 9, 2018 at the age of 94. He was born on June 25, 1924, in Nogales, AZ to Harry and Bessie Chernin, of blessed memory. He was the oldest of two sons; the fifth of eight children.
Homer grew up in the small border town of Nogales. His family moved to Texarkana for a few years and then returned to Nogales, where Homer attended high school until he graduated shortly after the war broke out.
Homer was decorated with the Purple Heart while serving in the Army during WWII as an infantryman in Europe. He attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he met his wife of 69 years, Gitta Warren of Chicago, IL. After marrying Gitta he began his career in the scrap metal business in Shreveport, LA, and then moved to banking in Tucson where he rose to Vice President of Operations, eventually moving to Tempe, AZ. Homer and Gitta moved to Heritage Pointe in Mission Viejo, CA in 2012.
Homer loved traveling the world with Gitta, especially after retiring from the bank at age 65. Beginning in 1981, Homer and Gitta hosted a family reunion in Coronado, CA, every summer for over 30 years. Homer was a great nature and animal lover, had a passion for gardening, and his thirst for knowledge was never quenched as he continued to educate himself throughout his entire life.
Homer is survived by his wife Gitta, his brother Hughie (Suzie) Chernin, his children Mark (Naomi) Chernin, Jeff (Caryn) Chernin and Lisa (Martin) Newman, his 5 grandchildren Ophir (Tami), Eli (Jenn), Rebecca (Jon), Brad (Tami) and Wes, his 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be August 14, 2018, 10:30am, at Harbor Lawn-Mt. Olive Memorial Chapel, 1625 Gisler Ave., Costa Mesa, CA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heritage Pointe Synagogue Fund in memory of Homer Chernin.
