James Kirkpatrick

Jim was born April 23rd, 1925 in Norfolk, Virginia. He graduated from Fishburne Military Academy before earning his Bachelor’s of Science degree from the US Naval Academy in 1947. Jim had a distinguished 25-year naval career rising to the rank of Commander. After earning his wings at flight school, Jim served as a naval aviator and combat information officer aboard the U.S.S. Kearsarge, U.S.S. Randolph, and the U.S.S. Hornet. He also served as a staff officer at the Pentagon. During his naval career Jim earned the WWII Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces EXP Medal (Cuba), American Campaign Medal, China Service Medal, and two Vietnam Service Medals. Jim retired from the Navy in 1969 and he and his family settled in Newport Beach CA. He then went on to earn his MBA from Pepperdine University and spent 20+ years in materials management with Shiley Labs and Edwards Laboratories (now part of Pfizer Corporation).

Jim met Olive Mier at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel at a naval officer’s dance in 1953 and it was love at first sight. Jim soon married Olive at St Andrews Church in Newport Beach and they recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. They became the proud parents of four children, James, Carol, Laura, and Lee. Jim was active in Boy Scout leadership and a fan at his children’s and grandchildren’s numerous school and sporting activities. He took pride and joy being a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Jim enjoyed bridge, day hiking, board games, reading, and watching science fiction shows/movies. He was an avid sports fan rooting for the Naval Academy, Newport Harbor High Football, the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees. Among friends, co-workers and family he was known for his integrity, honesty, strong work ethic, high ideals, and wry sense of humor.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Olive; son James; daughter Carol and husband Rolan; daughter Laura and husband Brad; son Lee and wife Bonnie; and six grandchildren; Melissa, Laura Belle, Chris, Alex, Claire, and Jack, along with a host of other relatives and friends. A private memorial will be held at St. Andrews Church in Newport Beach.
