Born on December 23, 1949, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Stamford, Connecticut, Ron was the beloved son of the late Natale S. Costabile and Helen (Stassano) Costabile.
Ron attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School in South Norwalk and graduated from Central Catholic High School in Norwalk in 1967. He went on to earn a business degree from Saint Michael’s College in Winooski, Vermont, in 1971.
A true adventurer at heart, Ron followed his passions across the country shortly after college, settling in Lake Tahoe, California, where he became a top ski instructor at Northstar. His love of the outdoors, especially skiing and sailing, defined much of his life and brought him lasting friendships and countless memorable experiences.
Ron later made his home in Newport Beach, California, where he embraced the coastal lifestyle he loved. A dedicated and accomplished sailor, he owned and lived aboard his beloved boat, Grace Anne, in Newport Bay. He was an active and respected member of the sailing community, participating in and often skippering numerous regattas and races, including the ALYC Sundowner Series and other Newport Beach competitions. Known for his steady hand and deep knowledge of the water, Ron was trusted to take the helm in prestigious events such as the McNish Classic, where he was given significant responsibility with great confidence by fellow sailors.
He generously gave his time and skills to others, always willing to lend a hand with maintenance, repairs, or crewing on races throughout the harbor and beyond. Ron was a proud member of the American Legion and the American Legion Yacht Club, and in recognition of his volunteer efforts, he was also named an honorary member of the Los Angeles Yacht Club.
Despite living on the West Coast, Ron remained deeply connected to his roots and cherished his visits back to Connecticut, where he spent time with his loving family.
Ron is survived by his sisters, Carol Dalesandro of Norwalk, Connecticut, and Bobbi Pavia (Gary Pavia) of Norwalk, Connecticut; his nephew Wayne Pavia (Cheryl Pavia) of West Palm Beach, Florida; his grandniece Denise Pavia and grandnephew Darren Pavia; his niece Jessica Pavia Pappolla (Victor Pappolla); his grandniece Olivia Pappolla; as well as many cousins and dear friends.
Ron will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his generosity, his deep love of family, and the joy he found on the water and in the mountains. He leaves behind a legacy of friendship, kindness and a life well lived. He will be laid to rest at sea, a place he loved most. Fairwinds and Following Seas Ron, may your journey continue beyond the horizon you loved so much.
