Stuart was predeceased by his father Isidore Borden and his mother, Sarah Borden. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Frances Rozner; his sisters, Ellen Borden Hattis ((Ronald) and Andrea Borden Roberts (Martin); and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephew and first cousins and their children, all of whom were greatly loved by him. Stu was born in Santa Monica and grew up in Pacific Palisades. He was a graduate of Palisades High School, Winter, 1966; USC Bachelors in Spanish, 1971; and CSU, Los Angeles, Masters in Educational Administration, 1993. Stu was incredibly talented and an all-around mensch. He was smart, funny, clever and kind. He often found a way to work in a masterful use of word play. When traveling abroad, he enjoyed using his skills in Spanish, French, and German.
A highly-respected teacher at Mark Keppel Elementary and Paramount Park School in the Paramount Unified School District for 26 years, he charmed his students with his wacky sense of humor, his guitar playing and his excellent command of Spanish used in bilingual instruction. He delighted in the fact that he was able to teach the children of some of his students and that others became teachers themselves and kept him updated via Facebook. He was a champion of preparing today’s students for the technology of the future, establishing one of the first computer labs in a K-8 school in the district. In retirement, he continued to utilize his technology skills as a volunteer with the Paramount USD Technology Department.
Stu was also a political activist, ever wanting to make the world a better place for all of us. He helped with the data side of political campaigns. He felt strongly about family ties and was the family historian, creating videos of family occasions and keeping everyone connected. Stu, ever the romantic, loved Andrew Lloyd Weber musicals, especially Phantom of the Opera, which he saw over 50 times and whose script he knew by heart. In his teens he caught the bug for commercial air flight – he found it exciting to view plane landings and takeoffs, often while listening to the tower commands via radio.
He enjoyed learning all he could about MAC and Apple products and then sharing that technology to impact the lives of those around him. Volunteering with the Long Beach Airport, he scanned hundreds of documents for their archives. With the California Retired Teachers Association, he sent out their members’ email newsletter. And pre-Facebook, he connected our neighbors through an email network.
He was a loving husband and dog dad and a steadfast friend. Our heartfelt thanks especially to Maria, MaryCruz, Melissa, Nicole, Sal, Sinai, and Stephanie who consistently provided such compassionate care to Stu these last few months. If you wish to honor Stu by making a difference in the world, please do vote this fall. If you wish to make a gift, please consider the Memorial Medical Center Foundation or the Pico Union Project in Los Angeles.
