Sylvia Rosenzweig, long-time, beloved Kindergarten teacher in the Irvine Unified School District, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on December 29, 2023. Sylvia grew up in New York City, where she attended the High School of Music and Art and Hunter College. She was a singer and performed in musicals in New York and in Sacramento, where she moved in 1960, after marrying the love of her life, Herbert Rosenzweig (Herb passed in 2019). Sylvia taught kindergarten and gifted education at the San Juan Unified School District before relocating to Orange County where Herb was appointed Director of Medical Services for Orange County Health Care Agency.
Sylvia had two daughters who she loved with all of her heart - Joy Kliewer (husband Todd) and Marcy Leavitt (Marcy passed in 2018). Sylvia was an acclaimed educator and incredibly popular teacher and workshop presenter. She was appointed as a mentor teacher in the Irvine Unified School District, where she taught for decades, first at Eastshore and then Westpark School. She was awarded Irvine Unified's Teacher of the Year in 1996 and was extremely proud of this wonderful accomplishment. After her retirement from teaching, she continued to tutor students, as teaching was her love.
Sylvia was an avid reader - she enjoyed participating in book clubs and hanging out at Einstein's bagels with her friend circle. She was a fan of musical theater and enjoyed going to Broadway musicals.
Over the years, she and Herb took dozens of cruises across the world, including to Asia and Israel. Sylvia was a glamorous, incredibly dynamic, and loving mother, wife, sister (to Ed Mann) and friend to all. Her magnificent spirit, beautiful presence, and giving heart and soul will be deeply missed by all.
Funeral services will be held on January 7 at 11am at Harbor Lawn-Mt. Olive, Costa Mesa. Guests are welcome to join the celebration of Sylvia's life.
