I’m sorry to hear of Toms passing.  I will never forget how nice he was to me during high school.  He was always happy and smiling.  He was outstanding at basketball and seemed to inspire the rest of the team.  He wasn’t arrogant and had the heart of someone who truly cared.  I am a better person because of Tom and the example he set.  My heart breaks for his family.  I pray the family finds peace knowing that Tom left his mark on humanity.

If Tom was your opponent on the Basket Ball Court, you better put two guy's on him. Some of my best school memories were of Tom shooting the lights out to the dismay of the other team. Tom was my long time school mate and one of the good guy's. I remember Tom and Kelly as the perfect couple. I'm so sorry for your loss. I guess God need Tom on his team.

Kelly and Family -- there is nothing that can prepare us, not even long illness, for the loss of a husband and father when it actually happens.  But perhaps one aspect of this inescapable reality will be a source of comfort.  When my father died, it was after an even longer illness than Tom's, so I should have been ready.  I wasn't.  Yet as the fact I was fatherless sunk in, I also realized I was now remembering my father as he once was - vibrant, youthful, at the peak of life.  I took stock of him as a whole person, not just the frail invalid he had become at the end of life.  Remembering Tom as he was for so many years, and all that he meant to you, is a happier thought than his untimely end, and the end we will all inevitably face.  

Meanwhile, the healing from your emotional wounds has only begun, and what we as your friends can do (little though it is) is to let you know we understand what you're going through and care very much for you.  We want the best for you.  Lean on us for anything as you recover.  This is what we mean when we say "our thoughts and prayers are with you."  It is a sincere message of our concern, hope, and support.
