Hilary Clair DeWitt, born May 27th, 1953 in England, passed away peacefully May 21st, 2025 at the North Island Hospital in Courtenay, BC. While it was sudden, she was surrounded by her loving family, and we would like to thank the ER department for their care and kindness.
She is survived and missed by her husband, Christiaan DeWitt, son Nicolas (Bonnie), daughter Erica (Nik), and her beloved grandsons Braden (Caitlyn), Brendan, Julius and Corbin, all of Courtenay, BC. As well, her Sister Dinah of Nanaimo, Eardley (Kathy) in Black Creek, Ben (Juli) of Kamloops and Bruce (Virginia) of Wabasca, AB and many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and co-workers from her amazing life.
Born in England, descended of the Rathbone's of Liverpool, Hilary's family emigrated to the valley when she was 6 months old. Enjoying a childhood in Dove Creek, she eventually moved north with her husband Chris. After saving money working for a little while, first in a hotel cooking (a natural talent), then in the lumber mill even, (proving one of many times how strong she was), they returned to their hometown of Courtenay with an idea, a lunch spot that became a favorite of many, the Dutch Deli.
The Dutch Deli was an immediate success, with a lineup at the door the very first day before it was even open. That passion for simple soups and quality homemade sandwiches continued every day, and Mum remembered many local favorite orders of her frequent customers even years later.
She successfully ran the Deli for 17 years, forming relationships that lasted a lifetime. That carried on into her next career at the Credit Union, where again, whether coworker or client, she enjoyed many treasured friendships.
Hilary had many exceptional qualities, but she will always be remembered as someone so kind, sweet and smiling. She loved to laugh, had a wonderful sense of humor and made every effort to help anyone anytime, however she possibly could. She strived to care for everyone in her presence, to make you comfortable, feel safe and loved. Not just her family, everyone she could.
We are holding a service at Piercy's-Mt Washington Funeral home, July 6th at 1pm. Drinks and sandwiches will be available after, to visit, share stories and mourn this great loss together.
