After a long life filled with many adventures and much love, “Red” passed away at home January 4, 2026. John’s adventures began in Botriphnie, Scotland where he was raised by his loving grandparents in a cottage on the Glentauchers Distillery. At the tender age of 12, he crossed the Atlantic with his Aunt Elsie, on their way to Saskatoon to join Elsie’s husband, John, and to meet cowboys. (Dad always loved horses!) John’s many escapades continued when he met and married the love of his life, Wilda Mae. The family moved to the Comox Valley in the early 70s. If you lived there at that time, it’s likely John delivered your mail and perhaps even a cord or two of firewood. Although he feared open water, John filled his children with fond memories of fishing trips off Bates Beach. Family camping and hunting trips were also among his passions. Once retired, John and Wilda enjoyed day tripping into the local mountains where they particularly loved harvesting salal and chanterelle mushrooms. Eventually, they moved in Hope to be closer to some of their grandchildren. John was predeceased by Wilda, his wife of nearly 50 years and a grandson, Alex. He will be greatly missed by son John (Linda) and daughter Linda (John), many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and especially by his cat, Eddy.
