Mike was born and raised in the Comox Valley and lived there his entire life. He graduated from Vanier Senior Secondary school in 1992. Mike loved to work, he spent a few years at odd jobs in the valley then became a bouncer at The Loft Cabaret and eventually a manager before pursuing his career in carpentry in 2005. Mike worked all over B.C., Alberta and Ontario doing Cladding and Construction with a few different companies. He truly treasured all the people he worked with over the years and one of his most favorite memories was being able to go to Niagra Falls with the guys. Mike was last employed with Kinetic Construction, he thoroughly enjoyed working for this company and loved his coworkers. Kinetic was very supportive of Mike and his family following his diagnosis. Many employees would check in to see how Mike was doing especially Keith.
Mike's biggest achievement and what he prided himself most on was his 3 children, Taylor, Alexis and Zachary. He was an amazing father and would do anything for his children. They were his life and his world. Although he was a single father, he remained very close to his ex-wife and they were amazing co-parents to their children.
Mike enjoyed watching his kids sporting games, going camping, sledding, building snow forts and mud bogging as well as fishing with his brother in-law and children. Mike had always wanted to go in a helicopter, for Father’s Day, his children arranged a helicopter tour over the Glacier and other mountains. It was one of the best days of his life. Anyone that knew Mike knew that he had a great sense of humor and enjoyed playing pranks on those he loved. Mike also had a heart of gold and would help out anyone that needed it.
Although life was busy for Mike often working away, he always made time for his family. He enjoyed the visits and dinners with his parents’ and sister. His parents loved him with all of their hearts and will miss his presence forever. After being diagnosed with Cancer and knowing time was short, his family rallied around him. His parents would visit regularly offering conversation, love and support whether it be at the hospital, chemo treatments or at home. His sister Alison visited often and made every effort to be at every appointment either in person or by phone. She showed tremendous love and support for her brother, checking in daily and making sure the healthcare system was doing everything they could for Mike. She was the Family’s rock and Mike’s angel.
Mike had some amazing friends throughout his life that he loved dearly. We would like to name a few that especially through his fight, were by his side every step of the way, offering support, guidance, care, humour and of course love. To one of Mike’s best friends, Marc and his wife Kaitha, the family cannot thank you enough for everything over this last year. To Mike’s long-time best bud Chris and wife Jen, thank you for making the journey and loving Mike with all of your heart, you made him a happy man. Shannon, your texts, calls, visits, smile, humour and love for Mike will never be forgotten.
Mike is survived by his parents, David and Dianne, ex-wife and very close friend, Michelle, his 3 children, Taylor, Alexis and Zachary. Sister, Alison (Andrew), nephew Ethan and niece Olivia. As well as numerous Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Friends. Mike always considered his brother-in-law Chris Anderson as the brother he never had.
Mike was pre-deceased by both sets of grandparents, Roy and Margaret Grieve and George and Dorothy Souter and second wife Betty Souter.
Mike’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Michelle for extending an invitation into her home for Mike and providing him with the best care and love in his final months. It allowed him the opportunity to make precious memories with his children, friends and family.
