Ronald was born in Rocky Mountain House and worked as a ranch hand in his early years which developed his love for the outdoors and gave him a strong work ethic. After a particularly cold winter on the range he decided the Navy could benefit from his experience and signed up. After he got out he decided his best bet was to place an oar on his shoulder and keep walking until someone asked him what he was packing – at that point he would be far enough from the ocean and could stop. Through a visit to a friend and a beer strike in BC he fell into his life’s career as a surveyor, a job that challenged him while allowing him to indulge his love for outside work. After a 30+ year career in surveying he retired and took up carpentry to keep his hands busy. He had a love of exploring, walking most of the mountains in the Thompson region and when his knees finally got too bad for walking, driving the backroads.
He is predeceased by his wife, Marlene Gabler of 58 years and survived by his daughter Sheila Gabler (David) and his brother Robert Gabler (Heather), nieces Anita Croteau (Gordon) and Kelly Gabler.
