Sean made me feel special, he made everyone around him feel special. He focused on the positive in life and had special ability to bring out the joy in every moment. His sense of humour and playfulness showed me that even though life might not be perfect or what you want, you still have the power to be happy.  This is a lesson I take to heart. A wisdom I aspire to. Thank you Sean for being a good friend.  May you rest in peace...

I have many stories with Bucko. We were on the same rotation to attend Medic A training together (quite a few times)and although I worked out of Prince Rupert , we crossed paths on numerous ships ,numerous times. I only found out today of his passing and I'm shocked and saddened. He was liked by all and he will be missed.

There are few people like Bucko, who can instantly add energy to everyone who is fortunate to meet him.  We sailed together back on the Douglas and as the only female onboard, I can honestly say what impressed me the most is that he respected me.  He treated me like everyone else and he always had a smile on his face.  Pure charisma and such a good sailor too.  Such a good human and I laughed every time I read his Facebook posts, but that's not the story.  Sean was special and I'm so glad he was a friend.

…..Sean has been hanging out with our family for about 44 years.
Ric brought him home from school one day. 
Being the performer, gymnast, Stunt Man, that he is –
Sean quickly won us over (Deb, Linda & me) 
we were happy to watch his tricks and cheer him on. 
(always the life of the party)

……in the year of the Millennium I moved to the island & Sean rented me a room until I got situated. He was at sea with the Coast Guard 3 weeks at a time. It was a pretty good `deal’ for me (paid $75/month to cover additional costs of toilet paper and salt) & keep the house nice and clean. Cec & Kevin & Sean even took me golfing once 
(always ready to help a friend in need) 

But the best part of the `deal’ * I got to know the Potter Family 😊. 
I agree with Linda “POTTERS ROCK!” They are the coolest, close-knit family. They do everything together, work & play & pray.
But the best part is their Hearts – 
& the love they will share with any `stray’ that needs their help.

……I’m tipping my hat to You, Sean for winning the battle of your life.

I admire your courage and determination to never give up. Keeping 
your sense of humor & (dignity sometimes…not the time you accidently mooned Deb & me at the hospital) (always the performer) 
Bravely reaching out to friends and sharing a little bit of what you were going through. Orchestrating and attending your own Celebration of Life.

Our paths crossed 3 times

- As little kids.  Sean was 2 grades ahead of me and was the neighbourhood leader as well as the elementary school Bad Ass. 
- As teens at the Altadore Gymnastics Club.  He taught us how to work and still have fun.  
- Recently in late middle-age.  Found each other on Facebook.   Last time we were together he took out his whole day with my family touring his new ship and the station.

It was a joy to have Sean in my gymnastics class. He was a talented gymnast and inspiration to the rest of the rest of the class. He will be missed but long remembered as a talented athlete. I was honored to coach him in my class. With deepest sympathy.

Sean will always be remembered as a great gymnast at Altadore in his red singlet, white tights, parted dark hair and excellent form.  Sean you made us proud and we will always remember you for your hard training, big heart and huge smile. 

I will always be inspired by my uncle Sean. The person he was, was truly outstanding. Words cannot articulate enough what a beautiful human he was. XO. 

We feel the loss when a superb mariner crosses the bar. Sean was seaman, leader, doer wrapped in a unique personality. He was a character, and had character. His integrity and devotion to his crews stood out again and again, as did his often raucous sense of humour, capped by a wicked, wry grin that kept you wondering, all in a good way.
He made a difference. He will be missed.

Sean (Bucko) Potter – An Officer & a Gentleman
You could not have had a better shipmate than Bucko, this was especially true for me. When we both joined the Pearkes in the mid-80’s, most sailors didn’t support women joining their deck crew. Not so for Sean. He was always fair, generous and kind to me. He respected the sailors craft, equal parts hard work and fun-loving. Sean was a man who understood intrinsically the value in having a ‘happy ship’. His attitude earned my and every person on board’s whole-hearted devotion. He was as cheerful splicing wire in the foc’sle, on-watch leading a deck crew, driving a workboat or taking centre stage at a ‘tweendeck ceilidh. When Sean got sick, even when he was feeling poorly, he doubled down on that optimism. He applied the same grace and curiosity he had always lived and his online social network was a master class in gratitude. “You can still dance, even if you hate the music” or “I don’t recall ever sustaining a Sex-Injury that wasn’t worth it” and everyone should go back and view the video he filmed while fishing off the dock at CG Base Bella Bella dancing so joyfully to Shakira. Go with God my friend, YOU will be missed!

To the Potter family - Sean will be deeply missed by all that have known him.  We remember his barber chair, the golf tourneys at Whitefish, his love of vintage hot cars and his penetrating sense of humour!  He was a 'one of a kind' in all of the best ways.  Our condolences to all of the Potter family  - we are very sorry for your loss.  

I met Sean at a party in the early 80’s and we became friends immediately. I certainly did not foresee at the time the significance of a friendship between a couple of guys who had the ability to make each other laugh so hard that tears run down your face, and you could not breathe would continue for over 40 years. Sean rated off the scale in all categories necessary to be a solid member of the “Quite a Guy” club. One time we attended a house party and several months later attended another at the same place, in the wee hours Sean and I went to the fridge only to find out there was no beer left, after a brief disappointment… Sean said, “we were here a few months back right and I think I left a stash”. We went to the bathroom and removed the toilet tank lid to find 4 cold beers with slightly rusted caps. This incident alone elevated him to the highest level in the Bro’s Hall of Fame. The impact he had on my life through his sense of good-natured humor and kindness helped me add a few attributes to my own character and I will proudly say that this friendship made me a better person. Sean worked as a Roughneck for me on a Drilling Rig in Alberta for a while and told me numerous times that I instilled in him a sense of practical operational safety awareness that he utilized his entire Marine career. This remains to me the greatest compliment I ever received and knowing the responsibility Sean shouldered throughout his career makes me even more proud of my friend. Sean’s internal moral compass exuded honesty, kindness, respect, and overwhelming optimism that things were always going to work out and we were going to have a lot of fun on the way. I am deeply saddened at the loss of my friend, but I will get past that and keep only the laughter knowing that Sean would kick my ass for being a crybaby. I saw your strength and courage. You did your best brother. Godspeed

I met Sean in 1987 ,  a cabin mate ,   A friendship that lasted over 30 years ,  A true friend who asked for nothing .  I wish I could have tossed Bucko a life jacket and pulled him into the life boat  and save him from the cancer . Sean helped and saved many in his lifetime , 
I’m proud Sean called me a friend ,   That is a honour .  
 RIP  brother ..  never forgotten and we will meet again .

Sending heart felt condolences to the family!  I remember when Sean sat in the bottom of our backyard family pool with his aqualung, just hanging out in the bottom during one of many pool parties.  He was a joy and one of the most interesting people I have met.  His heart is so big and I will cherish the hand painted wine glass that he had made for all the ladies from high school when we were invited to his home for the unveiling of his treasured octopus painting.  We were having a reunion at King Fisher Spa for our 50 year birthdays and headed to Sean's for a bash.  He is forever loved and cherished as a friend and will always be remembered for his smile, positive nature and generosity.  Sail on Sean, until we meet again....
