Heming, Janet Reid Mcluckie (nee Lyon) November 27, 1935 – April 23, 2020 (84yrs)

One of our mothers’ favourite past times was to read the obituaries, which often sparked a precious memory and a great conversation. Mum, we offer you this.

Beloved wife of the late Bernhard Heming. Adoring Mum to Douglas (Leanne), Sue-Ann (Steve), Nicole (Rob), Jay (Sandy) & Joy. Proud grandmother of Chera (Noel), Trevor, Ethan, Ava, Reid, Quinn and Cole.

Loving daughter of the late Margaret & William Lyon, dear sister to Ann Spittal (John) and the late Alex Lyon, A kind and gentle Aunt/Tante to many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A true and cherished friend to many.

Born in the Coaltown of Balgonie, Scotland she was raised by protestant parents alongside her two siblings. She was proud of her family and her Scottish heritage, carrying this pride with her throughout her years. Mum was our family historian; she knew every birth, marriage, death and important date – for both her immediate and extended family. She started work as a young woman in Scotland, a loyal and dedicated employee, working hard to pave her own way. In her late twenties she made her big move to Canada, eventually meeting and marrying the love of her life. We have heard, and dearly hold onto, the story of the Piccadilly Dance Hall. During the early years of wedded bliss, they resided in Whitby and Janet worked fulltime at Peddlers. They eventually made the move to Tyrone to raise their children where they lived for over twenty years. After all the kids were in school, she returned to the workforce with a pharmaceutical company in Stouffville. She loved that job and met some dear life-long friends before retiring to Oshawa.

Mum loved animals; cats were her favourite, fostering many orphaned animals making each of them a pet while teaching her children about life and its circle. She enjoyed gardening vegetables in her earlier years and flowers in her later years, always stopping to smell the roses and bask in their fragrance. She loved to dance in the kitchen with her kids or in the dance hall with her husband. She had a great talent and favourite hobby in knitting and crocheting – she could tackle the most complex patterns and re-create them with ease. She was proud to share the fruits of her labour with those she loved. We have all been adorned with her loving afghans, warm sweaters, hand-stitched tablecloths and beautiful doilies.

She had great loyalty to those she cared for and fought hard for what she believed. She loved and protected her children and grandchildren fiercely; they are her dynasty, her greatest treasures.

A private graveside service will be held. With sincere appreciation, in lieu of flowers, donations in Janet’s memory can be made to Lakeridge Health Foundation or Toronto Sick Kids Foundation. The family will host a Celebration of Life, once COVID protocols allow, details to be communicated at a later date
