Kelly Spencer was known as many things to many people. She was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew her best, Kelly will be remembered as a very exceptional person.
Kelly was born on August 8, 1977 at North York General Hospital in Willowdale, Ontario. She was the daughter of Ken and Janet and grew up in Oshawa, Ontario.
Kelly was raised with one sibling; brother, Michael. She was usually involved in all sorts of activities with him and experienced rivalries typical of a growing family. Through growing and maturing, they shared many life experiences together over the years.
As a young girl, Kelly had a number of interests. Like most children, she enjoyed playing and making up games. She was curious about the world around her and was often eager to explore it. Kelly was an active child who took part in soccer, T. Ball, and Ringette. She was also a Brownie, and went to Sunday School at Ebenezer Church. In her spare time she liked roller skating and baking. Kelly's memorable achievements included the E.S. Taylor Award in Grade 8, Industrial Arts Award, and also contributed to the year book publication. However, to Kelly, the most fun to be had was simply playing and spending time with her friends.
As a typical teenager, making that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood, Kelly had a fairly happy high school experience. Like every student, she enjoyed certain classes more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers. The teacher that impacted Kelly the most was Mrs. Coverley. Because of her strong influence, she motivated Kelly to join OSAID. This helped Kelly gain the confidence she needed and ended up being the President of this group. She was also a member of the Outers Club, and the soccer club where she earned the Jr. Soccer Award. Kelly graduated from Courtice Secondary in 1996.
Kelly enjoyed her college years, which may have been a challenge with all of the academics, responsibilities, and the sudden freedom that accompanied them, but Kelly was able to manage the balancing act. Her favorite professor was Miriam Terry. In June 2001, she earned her ECE diploma at Durham College.
Always considered a “good” friend to those she knew, Kelly enjoyed a broad group of acquaintances and several very close friends during her lifetime. While growing up, some of her best friends were Amy, Shawna, Beth, Leah, Barb, Jeremy, Graeme, Chris and Jenelle. Later in life, she became friends with Sandra, Cody, Colleen, Janet, Danielle, Kate, Susan, Michelle and Shelly.
Fortunately, Kelly enjoyed what she did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Kelly worked diligently and did her best to succeed in her career. She was employed for 16 years by the Real Canadian Superstore and her primary occupation was cashier. Kelly always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done. She was always actively involved in professional and community organizations and throughout her later years, Kelly was an active member of the Social Club at RCSS.
Kelly enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Her favorite pursuits were outdoor activities, including camping, and white water rafting. She was content to enjoy her favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share her interests with others. She enjoyed several recreational sports including roller skating and skiing. Kelly was a huge sports fan and enjoyed following her events whenever she had the chance to do so. Tops on her list was definitely hockey.
Kelly enjoyed traveling and time away on vacations. It was a chance for her to renew and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Favorite vacations included back packing through the BC trail, Portugal, Scotland, Jamaica, Dominican, Florida, and Myrtle Beach.
Kelly was a lover of animals and cherished her pets. One of her favorites was Falco, a German Shepherd dog. They were best friends for 4 years. Her family was rounded out by her cat Daisy.
Kelly’s faith was important to her. She was a member of Ebenezer United Church. During that time, she was involved in children's plays at Sunday School.
Kelly passed away on January 25, 2013 at home, Oshawa, Ontario. She is survived by her Dad, Ken, her Mom, Janet; brother, Michael, sister-in-law Julie, and niece, Kayla.
