 I was stunned and deeply saddened to hear, from Paul's sister Norma, of Paul's death.

 Paul and I grew up together, as we lived only a short distance from each other, and went to Courtice Public School (then S. S. No. 8) together, though I was a couple of grades ahead of Paul.

 We became very good friends, sharing a love of hockey – and cheering for the Maple Leafs – and also a love of baseball – though there I was a Yankee fan, while Paul was a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

 From 1967 on, I saw less of Paul, as I had moved to California, and then to Australia in 1974, returning to North America only in 1992, where my family and I have been living in Boulder, Colorado.

 During that stretch of time, I made it back to the Courtice area only occasionally, but when I did, it was always delightful to get together with Paul, both to catch up on recent happenings, and to reminisce.

 As I am a very poor correspondent, people rarely have reason to write to me, but I received a letter from Paul this past December, along with some newspaper clippings about some recent events.  Then Paul called me over the Christmas holidays, and we had a long conversation, with Paul as amusing and sharp-witted as ever.

 I liked Paul very much.  He was a highly intelligent person who had very strong but well thought out opinions, which he expressed in a forthright and usually very amusing away.  He was a person who very much traveled his own road, and I very much admired him for that reason.  I shall miss him very much.

My thoughts and prayers for Norma at this time. Sorry to hear of Paul's passing.   Just heard today from a Courtice High School Alumni as we prepare for our gathering Saturday.

We were sorry to hear of Paul's passing.  We have lived down the road from the Gearing's for the past 40 years.  Our sympathies to the family.
