Dear Kathy and family,

On behalf of all Rick's teammates at Weston Arena's Tuesday hockey, please accept our sincere condolences for your heart felt loss. We were deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Rick's passing.

Rick was not only a talented hockey player and teammate on the “black” team but more importantly a wonderful person and friend to all of us! For many years now, Rick would arrive early on Tuesdays and always sit in his same corner spot. Although a quiet person, he was always smiling. Rick was usually one of the first on the ice and always eager to take on our arch-rivals, the “white” team.

Rick's demeanor on the ice was one of calm however he was a solid force to be reckoned with whenever the “white “ team skated into his zone. Someone the “black” team could always depend on to bail us out.

With Rick looking down on us this past Tuesday, we know it would have put a huge smile on his face as his “black” team solidly beat the “white” team in his honour. Afterwards in the dressing room, we all toasted a beer in tribute to a truly great team mate. 

Rick, you'll be sadly missed by all of us on Tuesdays but our fond memories of you will always remain.

Rick was a teammate for years on Tuesday nights at Weston Arena in Toronto. He was always a pleasant, smiling and fun teammate who obviously enjoyed the game and the camaraderie very much.

Thank you all for coming, it means so much to our Family.
As Rick would say  -
‘ Helloo!!'

This past Monday we all lost Rick. One of the most kind-hearted people anyone could know. He was thoughtful, caring, loving and just fun to be with.
Rick was a wonderful Husband to Kathy, the proudest Father to Hayley and Tyler, an incredible Son to Margaret, Bruce, Doug and Pat, the sweetest Brother to me and Dom and such a caring Uncle to Nicholas, Brandon, Kyle & Ashley, Ryan & Heather, Kevin & Lesley. He was the best Stepbrother to Diana, Dion, Bob, Chris Tom & Stephanie and the best cousin to all.
He was just the BEST GUY and the easiest person to love. 

Rick was more than a Brother to me, he was my friend. He was the best friend anyone could wish for and he had a lot of friends. When Rick made you his friend, it was unconditional and forever.

Rick loved the simple things in life, being with family and sparking up the BBQ for everyone to enjoy or just sitting back with a few cold ones in the company of friends listening to tunes or watching a Leaf game. He had a passion for HOCKEY, not only did he love to play hockey from childhood to just recently, but he was so proud to coach his own Son, Tyler.

Rick loved his job and was dedicated to his work and well respected. He enjoyed the people he worked with, on and off the ships within his travels.

We were brought up as a close family. Rick and Susan were the first two Grandchildren and Susan could not say Ricky so she called him ‘RU RU' and the nickname carried on to this day.
Rick, Susan, Steven and myself were more than just cousins, we were like brothers and sisters. I remember the fun times we had as kids, the four of us would visit with Granny and Grandad and go the beach in Cobourg. We would bury each other in the sand, fighting over the horsey rides and we would race to the cantina for ice cream and I would cry because he was faster and he would laugh at me.

As kids, Rick and I were close, even though he would make me walk 10 feet in front of him just to get a razz out of me. There was one Christmas that I was hunted down by Rick and his new ‘JOHNNY 7' Rifle that he had desperately wished for and got from Santa that year. All the time that I was being shot at Rick, had that smerk on his face, that same smerk that we all know and grew to love.

In our teen years, I became known as ‘Rick's Little Sister' and we continued to be good friends and we had friends in common and enjoyed our weekly get-together's and Parties and many camping trips. Rick loved camping and fishing.

One of the best things Rick did was to marry Kathy. They are soul mates, but they didn't realize it in the beginning because they were best friends. They built a life together and have two beautiful children, last summer they fulfilled one dream, they bought their own cottage and Rick was dreaming of getting out on the lake in his new boat to enjoy. They just weren't finished yet! There was so much more to do…

The next time you are sitting by a lake or a pool or just relaxing with a cold one in your hand, raise your drink and say 

‘Here's to you Rick, you are with us in spirit'
He will smile down…

Dear Kathy and family,

I met you under the saddest of circumstances.   During that very short meeting, I watched a wife encourage her husband to pucker up for a kiss as she stroked his hair.  I watched a brother and sister lock eyes and look into each other's souls with love and friendship.  I watched daddy`s little girl love her dad with her eyes and her smile.  I saw a mother sit by her son`s side with a steadfast love that is only possible between a mother and child.  I watched an uncle and his wife look down upon his nephew with sadness and disbelief.  I didn`t know Rick, but I know with all certainty that he was loved so deeply and that his passing is leaving a huge void in the hearts of everyone that he touched.   Someone so special can never be forgotten. Hold on to your memories, and let them guide you during this time of sadness.

Where do I begin....... Thank you for giving me a wonderful life, 26 great years together, the early years, the ones that shaped us and made us grateful for everything we have today. Thank you for my amazing children that are so much a part of you. Thank you for sharing your family with me, who then became my family. You were the best husband, when I lost family members you were always there to wrap your arms around me and comfort me. You worked so hard to give us more, but you always gave your time to me, to the kids. The next 26 years were going to be the easy years, life at the cottage and travelling, all the plans we had. But this was not to be, ripped away from us by this horrible disease called cancer. We were with you every minute, you knew how loved you were, I cherish every last minute I got to spend with you. How will I ever spend the rest of my life without you? I can't even imagine...... I am not going to say good-bye, just see you later, because I will be with you again. Until then, rest in paradise, always, your loving wife.

It was the light in Rick's eyes when he smiled, which was often, that I will always remember. He was a kind, amazing man who loved his family with all his heart. His passing was far too soon. He was far too young. Rick and Julie were more like siblings to Steve and I than cousins, especially since we all lived together for the first few years of our lives and then across the road for many more. So sorry for your loss...I haven't seen Rick in many years as we use to play hockey together on the Agincourt Condors with his cousin Steve French. A great teammate and  a nicer guy you couldn't find. He fit in with a group of unfamiliar guys like he was a friend always. Shows the person he was and that he will be remembered as such...a great human being.

Kathy we haven't seen each other in a very long time, however I still have fond memories of working together, I always enjoyed hearing of Rick and how wonderful he was at renovating and painting. First, Christy, Adam, and I would like to offer our deepest sympathy to all of you in this time of sadness.  Such a loss can only really be felt by those closest to the loved one that has left us. Feeling sad and in shock at the startling news of his illness, I have spoken to co-workers, friends and family about Rick taking ill of late, and his eventual passing.  I found myself a little off, when trying to speak to exactly who Rick was and what he meant to my family and I from a relation stand point. As the days passed, I had time to reflect on that feeling of not knowing quite what the answers were to who Rick was and what he meant to us. We have known Rick for 20 years, ever since Margaret came into our lives. We have gotten to know his lovely family for that same amount of time. My Family and I have spent  2-3 holiday dinners together with Rick and all of you, every year, for all of those years as well. Heck, I come to depend on Rick up North at family holiday dinners, because he was always there to provide me a reason to have a beer because he'd always have one too. Lastly, I also had the rare opportunity to marvel at a guy that may well have had an appetite that equaled mine.  Okay, maybe I am just pacifying myself here but the guy could eat! To me personally, Rick was a man's, man, to the core!
This is a man that was kind to myself and my family from the minute we were introduced. A man that was full of pride when it came to his family and a guy that was obviously well respected for his work achievements and his overall character. When I heard the finality of Rick's passing yesterday, it dawned on me what Rick was to us and what he meant to my family and I.....he was FAMILY...plain and simple, he was a member of our family and he made us all feel very much a part of his as well. No question his presence will be sorely missed, so clearly what he meant to us can not be measured or put into words. All I know for sure is that we lost one of our own yesterday.  We lost one of the best, far too soon. Rest well Rick, gone but never forgotten.
