William Griffin Sutherland

October 28, 1943August 19, 2020

William (Bill) Sutherland passed away peacefully at Oshawa General Hospital on August 19, 2020.

Devoted and loving husband to Valerie for 55 years, a wonderful Dad to Bill (Andrea) and David (Lucie) and a fantastic papa to Kay, Jill, William and Jonathan. Bill was proud of Kay for graduating from Western University this year, he was happy that Jill accepted a soccer scholarship at Saint Leo University in Florida and he was pleased that William and Jonathan were having so much success with their hockey.

Bill leaves behind his sister Jane (David), his sister in law Maria (Malcolm) and brother in law William. Bill will be missed by all his nieces and nephews, his relatives and friends in England and here in Canada. Bill was born in Greenock, Scotland and spent the majority of his youth in Findhorn, a small fishing village in Moray on the eastern shore of Findhorn bay. Bill followed in the footsteps of his dad and uncles and trained to be a baker. After Moving to Liverpool to work the ships of the merchant navy he met and married Valerie in 1965, eventually moving to Canada in 1969, where the family settled.

Bill enjoyed working at Home Depot and all the time spent with his co-workers, this was his final job before retirement. Bill was a passionate Liverpool F.C. fan, following from afar, but not missing any of the games on the telly. He was thrilled to watch his beloved LFC win the Champions League and the English Premier league in the past 12 months.

You'll Never Walk Alone! In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations be made in Bill Sutherland’s honor at the Canadian Cancer Society or with your local National Cancer Society.

William has been a patient of mine for several years. He was always up for a Liverpool discussion and reminiscing about the years, especially his life on the ships. He was always good for a story, a laugh, and would brighten the rest of my day.

I will always remember his kindness, his passion for life, and his love for his dear family. You will be missed and never forgotten.

My deepest condolences to William's family.

Memories shared with me of my Mum and Dad's time with Bill when he lived in Liverpool always ended with how he was a nice man - kind and gentle.

Thinking of you all.

So many happy memories of my lovely brother. Billy had an amazing memory and was a wonderful raconteur with so many interesting stories to tell but our conversations invariably came back to our younger years growing up in Findhorn. Such happy times.
Goodnight Billy, forever in my thoughts.
Love Jane and family

our memory of Bill always makes us smile when we went to C.N Tower right at the top was a viewing area which the floor was made of glass, we all went on this one by one except for Bill but we eventually persuaded him to walk on it and he really enjoyed it, but Val declined. Maid of the Mist Niagara are also good memories. Too many to mention. Good times when Bill came to England and also the times we went to Canada lots of lovely memories thanks Bill will love you always and will never be forgotten. I will cheer for Liverpool for you when the season starts again goodnight Bill love always Maria Malc Darwen Lancashirex

Bill was one of our very first clients when we opened years and years ago. He used to come in every Saturday to weigh his dog....and of course, buy some dog treats. We will always remember him as the gentleman with a 'proper' accent who loved his dog so very much. We will all miss his pleasant words and gentle nature.

My most vivid memory of Bill was when he and Valerie came over to Liverpool during the early 90s. He was so eager to give us the presents he had brought us from Canada. He gave us a denim jacket and a Toronto Blue Jays cap which we absolutely loved. We went on walks with him as he told us about his love of walking and of life in Canada. I always remember his accent it was so different from ours but was captivating as he told us his stories. My thoughts are with my aunty Valerie, my cousins David, Bill and their families.

Goodnight and God Bless Bill

We were saddened to hear of Billy's passing. We fondly remember the few times we were together as family and shared many memories of the Roe and Sutherland clans in Scotland.
Condolences from cousin Betty and family.
