“Chuck” lived his life as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, with a foundation of ironclad faith in Lord Jesus Christ as his savior. On May 8, 2026, at the age of 96 years old, he reached out his hand to the Lord, and joined his wife, mother, father, and siblings in the kingdom of Heaven.
Chuck and his wife, Mickie, were married for over 49 years. During that time, they traveled to more than 60 countries, experienced a vast number of different cultures, and found great joy in embracing all the world has to offer. He walked the path of Jesus in Jerusalem, prayed where the apparitions were witnessed by the six children in Medjugorje, stood on the beaches of Normandy, and provided mission work in South America and Asia. On these journeys, he changed the lives of those travelling with him, and enriched the lives of those he met along the way.
Chuck absolutely loved fishing and all animals, especially reptiles. He took every opportunity he possibly could to fish anywhere and everywhere. If there was a reptile nearby, you could guarantee that he would catch it and bring it home. He loved singing in various church choirs, and was a very active member of the Lions Club. He always possessed a soft spot in his heart for others who were less fortunate than him. He taught his children to be kind, reminding them “there is always someone that is worse off than you”-- a call to appreciate the things they had and to provide for others when they can.
Shortly after graduating from high school, he joined the United States Army, and served as a sergeant in the military police during the Korean Conflict. He was incredibly proud to be a member of the United States Army, dedicated to the service of his country. After his military discharge, he worked for a time in the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department doing field studies in the marshes. He then traveled to South America, where he lived in the Amazon, exported animals to zoos, and did filming for Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. After returning from the jungle, he started a career as a custom/freight agent, working with Eastern Airlines for over 25 years before the airline ceased operations.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mickie Morano Hawkshead, his parents, Corinne Morris Hawkshead and John Jay Hawkshead Sr., and siblings: John Jay (Millie), Lovey (Edwin), and Mary Lee Hawkshead. He is survived by his son Troy Hawkshead (Mandy), daughters: Kim Hébert (Leon), Melody Restivo (Eddie); grandchildren: Ellie (Seth Patterson), Anna (Wes Prill), Ashley, and Luke Hawkshead; Kelsey, Isaac, and Macey Hébert; Jude, Nicolette (Byron Williams), Rhett (Jessica), Taylor, Caitlyn, and Cole Restivo; great grandchildren: Rendi, Rance, Gio, and Riley, and his brother-in-law Emile Morano. The family would like to personally thank Home Instead, especially his caregiver, April Meyer, for the unconditional love and care she provided in the final year of his life on his earth. She truly was a blessing in our father’s life.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to Grace Funeral Home on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 450 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington Louisiana, 70433. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., mass at 11:00 a.m., and interment to follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery at 34888 Grantham College Road, Slidell Louisiana. Memorials can be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
