October 20, 1951 – July 17, 2025
With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Hernando Diaz — a devoted father, husband, brother, uncle, and great uncle. He was a gifted craftsman, and generous host whose energy, creativity, and deep love for his family will be missed beyond measure.
Born in Bogotá, Colombia, and a Louisiana resident since the age of six. Hernando lived a life full of purpose and passion. He is survived by his two children, Dawn and Dustin, his son in law Robert, his partner in life, Sonya - who cared for him with tireless love and strength until his final breath, four sisters, brothers in law, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Hernando found joy in bringing people together — inviting friends and family to his coveted fish fries. He celebrated gatherings with extraordinary effort and thoughtfulness, turning everyday moments into meaningful traditions. His passion for hospitality extended to his home, where he built a guest house to welcome visiting family and friends, alongside lush gardens, bamboo, a swimming pond, above-ground vegetable beds, chickens, a coop, and a workshop — all handcrafted, all uniquely his.
He loved karting on his trails and got a thrill having a passenger white knuckling the safety bars while he whipped so effortlessly around pine trees and through his bamboo trails.
His property was intentional and full of life — the work of a true artist. As a builder, Hernando was revered by the historic homeowners of New Orleans, who waited patiently for his skill and signature craftsmanship. His legacy lives on in the custom work he so lovingly created.
His absence leaves a deep and quiet void — one felt by all who knew and loved him.
Resting never suited him. So while we say goodbye for now, we imagine him already designing something extraordinary in the great beyond — perhaps even an altar in heaven.
We will miss our dear Nano.
Thank you for your love and support during this time.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Grace Funeral Home (450 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington).
Attire for Services and Celebration: Hernando would want everyone to be comfortable. Please, wear something you would wear to one of his fish frys. No suits or formal dress, please.
