Mary Lou Kavanaugh, 90, of Mandeville passed away on August 24, 2026 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 3, 1935, in New Orleans to the late Conrad & Leanora Wright. She is preceded in death by her parents.
Mary Lou graduated from Mandeville High School. She then went on to Southeastern Louisiana University where she earned her bachelor's degree in Music Education. Shortly after, she began her teaching career in New Orleans metro area. Mary Lou achieved a Masters Degree plus 30 while attending the University of New Orleans. Mary Lou met Howard at a cookout with friends. They were married on August 16, 1959 and just celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Together, they raised their family in Metairie, and then moved to the Northshore in 2005.
Mary Lou loved music and grew up playing piano and organ at the various churches. She played at several venues and musical theaters throughout her career. She also taught piano and vocal lessons. Mary Lou was a member of St Timothy Methodist Church. She was also a member of the SPCA and animal welfare organizations. Mary Lou was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to so many. Her legacy lives on in all of us, and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mary Lou is survived by her loving husband, Howard V.Z. Kavanaugh; children, Terri (Michael) Burt, Howard C. Kavanaugh, and Robyn Ferguson; grandchildren, Angelle, Connor, Parker, Maci, Kylie, Cooper, and Jolie; and a great grandson, Brooks. Mary Lou also leaves behind to cherish her memory a host of friends and extended family.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at the Grace Funeral Home (450 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington). Her Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at Grace Funeral Home (450 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington). Graveside Services will follow at Mandeville City Cemetery.
