Melvin is survived by his beloved wife Martha G. Hyman; his children Mel Jr. (Mimi), Dwayne, Mary Ann, David (Krystle) and Kaitlyn; 12 grandchildren Nathan, Devin, Mel III, Kristen, Emily, Hailey, Falyn, Bowen, Cullen, Caleb, Oliver, and Emelia (including several great-grandchildren); and his loving siblings; Diane Saltalamacchia, Earl Hyman, Alvin Hyman, and Jeanie Knoess. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents Jack Louis Hyman and Gladys Moreau Hyman, as well as his brothers Jack Hyman and Ronald “Nick” Hyman.
Melvin and his siblings were raised by Jack and Gladys in the St. Roch Park area of New Orleans. He spent his formative years working in his father’s grocery store near Frenchman and Elysian Fields, boxing in the local club and running the streets of St. Roch park with his brothers. In St. Roch Park, the Hyman girls were known for their beauty, and the Hyman boys were known for their skill at getting into trouble and fighting. Melvin was known for getting into less trouble than his older brothers and was always taken care of by his siblings. He was baptized and made his first communion at St. Anthony of Padua Church on Canal street. Melvin attended St. Aloysius High School and was a star track athlete and boxer. Melvin was a devout Catholic and a member of the Disciples of the Divine Mercy. By far his most outstanding accomplishment was being a father, in which he was surpassed by none. His quick wit, sense of humor, boisterous laugh and eternal patience made him immensely popular among his children, their friends, his coworkers and all who had the pleasure to have met him. He had a gentle and merciful nature and an indomitable spirit. His absence has left a void that can not be articulated but is clearly felt.
The family appreciates prayers and thoughtful memories. Melvin will be laid to rest in a private family graveside service at St. Joseph’s Abbey.
