Billy (Bill) Ray Zimmerman, Sr., passed away peacefully August 17, 2026 at The Haven in Hayden, Colorado. He was born in Topeka, Kansas to Bill B. and Edna (Searcy) Zimmerman. He moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado with his father, mother and sister Darlene in 1928. Bill was very ill when they made the journey, but once he was residing in Colorado, he recovered and has lived to be nearly 100 years old. The family lived in Steamboat Springs until he was in his teens and moved to Craig for his father’s work. In his senior year of school, he enlisted in the Army and was sent to Japan.
When he returned to the States, he married the love of his life Bertha (Bert) Ross. They brought into this world two children, daughter Sheryl and Son Ray. The family grew to four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bert (2013), his sister Darlene, brothers John and Charles (Chuck), and granddaughter Brianna. He is survived by his children, Sheryl (Garry) Wynkoop, Ginger (Zac) Cox, and Chad Zimmerman; and his great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren.
Bill’s dog Zoey was his buddy, especially after his wife passed. He loved to play poker and golf as long as a little betting was involved. As a geologist his passion in life was prospecting for gold.
Bill, dad and grampa, was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 24, 2026, at Craig Cemetery, with military honors presented by the VFW post 4265 and American Legion post 62.
