Jay D Hayes passed away peacefully at his home on September 7, 2021. He was born August 8, 1935 in Hayden, CO to William Clayborn and Lily Dora Hayes. He was born with class, spirit and a ton of honest try. Jay worked ranch jobs growing up and found his knack for horses and hard work. He would later join the United States Army enlisting from 1954 to 1957, proudly serving in Korea. He married his one true love and high school sweetheart, Dorothy Simonton in 1956. Anytime he looked at her his blue, blue eyes would twinkle and dance. He was first and foremost a husband, father and grandpa. Jay worked cowboy jobs and was always referred to as a “helluva hand.” He was a well respected operator on heavy equipment, helping to build many of the roads and reservoirs around Hayden. He retired from Seneca Coal Mine in 1997. Jay lived the best life, his generosity and patience were limitless. Jay and Dotty welcomed all comers, and sheltered all souls. He never passed judgment on a person and had a way of making everyone feel comfortable. He was a prankster, joker, bullshitter and our rock. The kind of friend no cowboy likes to lose. His love of horses was fostered by his father, who was also a fine horseman. A man of few words, so witty and droll. No one could work or teach a horse like Jay, he loved them and was a well respected horseman. Solid, loving and kind. He is survived by - Daughter Rebecca (Clint) Overstreet- Grandchildren Kelsi Overstreet (Travis Miller), Tucker (Jessica) Overstreet. Wendy (Dirk) Kenny. Doyle (Dalene) Hayes – Grandchildren Shayne (Jimmy) Brach, Luke Hayes – Great Grandchildren Jax & Joel Brach.
