Michael Dean Murphy

Michael Dean Murphy's story began on February 23, 1955, where he was born in the old Hayden hospital to William and Shirley Murphy. He embraced small-town life to the fullest, developing a lifelong love of the outdoors through camping, fishing, hunting, and helping on his uncle Lawrence's ranch. His early years were filled with teasing his siblings, running amok with his cousins and friends, and spending long days working in the fields, often ending with a friendly game of basketball with the boys in the barn.

Mike found the love of his life early when he met and married Dianna Sumpter. Together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and love, raising three children who became his greatest pride.

Mike truly understood the value of hard work and providing for those he loved. He spent more than 40 years working in the coal mines, earning the respect of generations of miners and inspiring many along the way, including his own son. He could fix just about anything, and the lines and calluses on his hands told the story of a lifetime of honest work. Many of those stories live on through the hands of his children and grandchildren, who worked alongside him and learned not only practical skills but also the value of dedication, perseverance, and taking pride in a job well done.

While Mike worked tirelessly, he found his greatest happiness in life's simple pleasures: caring for his pets, cooking for family gatherings, and watching his grandchildren grow through each milestone. More than anything, his greatest joy was his family.

Michael Dean Murphy, 71, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, in the home he and his beloved wife raised their family and shared many memories. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, cousin, and friend whose quiet strength, unwavering work ethic, and deep love for his family touched countless lives.

His presence will forever travel on with those who loved him—in the climb to the top of Mount Agner, along the winding roads and creeks of California Park, at the campsites of Dunkley Flat Tops, on the out west adventures to Brown's Park, and the peaceful porch-side sunsets at the family's cabin. Those places will forever hold memories of his laughter, wisdom, and steady presence.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Dianna Murphy; his children, Michele (Justin) Pike, Calvin (Andi) Murphy, and Amanda Tucker; his grandchildren, Bailey Pike (Taylor Lewis), Connor (Kinley) Murphy, Cort Murphy, Alec Tucker, Noah Pike, Abby Tucker, Aislyn & Cross Murphy, and Isiah Tucker; sisters Patti (Sam) Montieth and Cindy Murphy; in-laws Scott Sumpter, Jeff (Cheryl) Walkup, Doug Sumpter, and Delbert Sumpter; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and former coworkers who will forever remember his gentle smile, willing hands, teasing humor, and generous heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Shirley Murphy; brother, Jerry Murphy; sister, Sherry Silver; nephew, Dwayne Montieth, and great nephew, Tristan Campbell.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held on Sunday, July 5th at the Hayden Cemetery at 10:00 with a lunch following.
