Born December 27, 1954 in Corpus Christi, Texas, she was a daughter of Jamie G. and Bernetta Jeanine (Blair) Milam. Her parents preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a half-brother, Kenneth Milam.
Surviving are two sisters, Nancy Morrison of Fort Myers, Florida and Susie Pender of Creve Coeur and one niece, Tina (Keith) Steinbaugh of Palm Desert, California.
A 1973 graduate of Rockridge High School, Gwen also was a graduate of Bradley University with both a Bachelor and Masters Degree.
Gwen worked early in her career as a computer operator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, then for International Harvester and also at WMBD-TV. She then taught school in the Abingdon School District and Morton Community Unit School District 709. After Gwen retired, she did substitute teaching in Creve Coeur until she became a full time caregiver for her mother. When her mother passed away in 2021 she took the responsibility to care for her sister, Susie. She took very good care of her mother and sister and her willing sacrifice to give up her life for them is so much appreciated by her family.
Gwen had a love for dogs, especially for Janey and Bigun. Janey was her dog and Bigun was Susie's dog who Gwen took over care of.
Her graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, located at 2040 US-150, Galesburg, Illinois. Father Tom Swegle will officiate. Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in Peoria or to the Jewish Federation of Peoria, where she did a lot of volunteer work.
