October 31, 1924May 7, 2018

Betty Jane Cunningham, of Cross Lanes, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend went home to be with the Lord, Monday, May 7, 2018. She passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 93 years old. She was born October 31, 1924, the daughter of Othie and Cordia Null Withrow. The Withrow and Null families were two of the families that originally settled in Cross Lanes. Betty and her family were one of the firsts to live on Claybank Road in Cross Lanes, which was known to Betty as the “homeplace”. She worked at the Visco plant in Nitro, and later at Point Harmony Elementary School, she was a homemaker and a mother to three children. She was a 1943 graduate of Dunbar High School, and was a member of the ASPCA, where she spent a lot of her time rescuing animals and caring for them in her home. She was a member of the Community Chapel Church in Cross Lanes. She had an amazing, faithful love for God, and it showed brightly through her love for people, animals, and life. Betty was an avid gardener and spent countless hours working in her yard and flower beds. Above all, we will remember Betty’s deep love for nature and the changing of the seasons and her love for the smell of springtime flowers; her love for Christmas and the excitement she felt to see new fallen snow. We will remember the glimmer in her eyes and the pure love and laughter in her heart. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Eugene Cunningham; her son, Dale Cunningham; her sisters, Beatrice Lemon and Alma Price; and, her son in law, Jeffrey Hart. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Cunningham and friend, Clayton Willis of Cross Lanes; her daughter, Barbara Hart of Cross Lanes; her grandson, Owen Keffer of Pinch; her granddaughter, Ashley Vaughan and husband, Frank, of Pinch; her granddaughter, Samantha Keffer and friend Jamie Messer of Cross Lanes; and, great-grandsons, Jacob & Hunter Vaughan and Riley Keffer. The family would like to give a special thanks to Betty’s beloved aid, Lisa Cunningham, who cared and loved Betty as her own grandmother. And, a special thanks to Samantha Smith, who was also Betty’s aid. John 16:22 “Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” A celebration of Betty’s life with be held at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home 5233 Rocky Fork Rd., Cross Lanes, WV 25313 on Monday, May 14th, 2018 at 3:00PM Reverend Tom Hayes officiating.
