She was born in Charleston on August 27, 1949 to the late Johnnie Thorton Smith Senior and
Mary Helena Smith.
Betty Lou was a dedicated and hard worker throughout her life. She began her work at the
young age of sixteen at the Daniel Boone Hotel, where she worked for approximately 16 years.
This is where she met her loving husband Jim Estep. She continued her dedication to comfort
and service at Edgewood Summit where she worked her way up to a dining room supervisor.
Her dedication to her hard work created lasting friendships with her coworkers and residents. As
dedicated as she was to her work she cared the most about her family. A loving mother to her
daughter Margie, and an amazing grandmother to her grandchildren, Haylee and Kaden.
Betty Lou will be missed by many. She was preceded in death by: her sister Mary Meadows,
brothers Johnnie and Carl Smith. She is survived by her brother Robert Smith of Cherryville,
North Carolina. Her husband James Estep of Dunbar, and daughter Marjorie (Matthew)
Stephenson of Dunbar, grandchildren Haylee Huffman and Kadenn Stephenson, and many
nieces, nephews and cousins.
