

Everett Lee Adkins, 83, of St. Albans, passed away after a long illness at Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston. At work at Union Carbide he was known as "Pod," and to family he was "Duke," and to many youth basketball, baseball, and football players in St. Albans, he was always "Coach." He was born June 18, 1933 in Ethel. He was raised in Man, attended Man High School and went to work in the coal mines at the age of 16. Later he joined the Air Force and met the love of his life, Lou Dean McComas, to whom he was married for 63 years. He then attended Marshall College and worked again in the coal mines and clay mines in northern WV. In September 1959 he began work at Union Carbide where he was an Operator, Day Shift Supervisor, TDI and DDT operations specialists, Industrial Hygienist, and Safety Administrator before retiring in January 1994. While working at Union Carbide, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Education at WV State College and his Master’s degree in Safety Administration from Marshall University and was a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers. He was a proud fan and follower of Marshall University athletics and Cincinnati Reds baseball. He was preceded in death by his mother, Agnes Burton Adkins, his father, Kenous Adkins, daughter, Valerie Dean Adkins, brother, Hartley Adkins, brother, William Tobert Adkins, and sister, Ella Mae Straitiff. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lou Dean McComas Adkins, daughter Pamela Bowling (Terry Johnston) of Garner, NC, son, Richard Lee Adkins (Terri) of St. Albans, WV, grandchildren, Brandy Potter (Robbie) of St. Albans, Richie Adkins (Emily Church) of St. Albans, WV, Brittany Ragle (Derek) of Scott Depot, WV, Ashley Bowling (Andrew Houston) of Garner, NC and Alex Bowling of Garner, NC, Jake Shears of St. Albans, Great Grandchildren, Kaitlyn Pulliam of St. Albans, WV, Andrew Potter of St. Albans, WV, Natalie Potter of St. Albans and Dawson Ragle of Scott Depot, WV, brother Ralph Adkins (Barbara) of Gainesville, Georgia, brother Charles Adkins (Bonnie) of Hickory, NC, brother David Adkins of West Hamlin, WV, sister Mary Cummings (Tommy) of Brewster, Ohio, sister Genevieve of Massillon, Ohio, and sister-in-law Vonnie Adkins of Charleston, WV, sister-in-law Joanna McComas of East Liverpool, Ohio and many, many nieces and nephews that he loved and cherished.
