Jean Winfree

She was born in October of 1934 to the late Joseph R Elswick and Maggie Lutricia (Lyons) Elswick of Crown Hill WV, and the stepdaughter of Thelma Lee Elswick. She was the youngest of 9 children. Five sisters; Reba Ball, Irene Cole, Pauline Samples, Peggy Jo Shelton and Ilene Stanley. Three brothers; Estell Elswick, Harold Elswick, and Freddie Elswick.

Jean and her late husband Martin M. Winfree lived in Dunbar WV for 31 years. While in Dunbar, they were active members of Humphreys United Methodist Church, and active members of the Dunbar Order of Eastern Star. During this time, she worked 33 years at the WV Dept. of Employment Security, where she became the Assistant Director.

She is survived by one daughter, Pam Hoover, one granddaughter, Holliann Rucker, and two great grandsons in Morgantown WV, as well as a host of nieces and a nephew.

In 1991 she and her husband moved to the Outer Banks NC and lived their dream at the beach for 34 years.

Celebration of Jean’s life will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 24, 2025 at Tyler Mt. Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Tyler Mt. Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Gathering of family and friends will be from 1 until time of service at the funeral home.
