Jerry Howard Young

Jerry Howard Young, 86, of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, humor, and deep love for family. Born in 1939 to Roy and Nola Young, Jerry was one of ten children in a lively and close-knit family that shaped the values he carried throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Janet Young, and his youngest son, James Brian Young (Debra). He was also preceded by his siblings Cloda Statts (Pete), Kathleen Strickland (Bernard), Boots Nida (Paul), Roy Young (Wanda), Leatrice Malone (Tracy), his twin sister Joan Abbott (David), and Sandra Stricklen (Grant).

Jerry is survived by his siblings Ronald Young (Judy) and Francine Sutcliffe (Roy), oldest son, Michael Alan Young (Tena), and his cherished grandchildren, Cadance, Ethan, Carly, Peyton, and Beatrice, as well as his great-grandson, Teddy, who brought him immense joy. His last few years were spent mostly with his oldest grandchild, Cadance, who was his full-time caretaker. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins who will deeply miss “Uncle Tubby,” especially his “best cousin,” Quentin Reed, with whom he shared a special lifelong bond.

Jerry’s strong work ethic began early, delivering newspapers across Charleston on three different routes as a young boy. After graduating high school, he followed his interest in aviation to Washington, D.C., where he worked for Piedmont Airlines. He later returned home to Charleston and built a long and respected career at Yeager Airport, where he served as a Ramp Supervisor and was fondly known as “Fuzz.” He remained dedicated to his work until his retirement from US Air following the events of September 11, 2001.

He had a lifelong passion for aviation and could talk endlessly about airplanes and his experiences on the job. Yet, his greatest joy was found on the open roads of West Virginia. Jerry loved driving for hours through the mountains and along winding rivers, often searching for the perfect fishing spot to share with Quentin. These adventures, filled with quiet beauty and changing seasons, were among his most treasured memories.

Jerry will be remembered for his captivating stories, his love of family, and his playful spirit—especially his fondness for a good practical joke. His stories of work, travel, and family life will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home on Monday, August 3, 2026. with Pastor Jeff Nichols officiating

.Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., with the service following at 2:00 p.m. A light luncheon will be held immediately following the service.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
