

He was born and raised in Kenton, OH, on August 9, 1929, the son of Ted and Ethel Baier. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati. He married Betty Jean Daws in 1952 and enjoyed 63 years of marriage before she passed in 2016. He served his military obligation as a Captain in the Army working the Sault Locks at Sault Ste. Marie Michigan.
They settled in St Albans, WV where he became a proud member of St Andrew United Methodist Church. He was a trustee and oversaw the addition of an elevator at the church. He sang in the choir and often said he couldn’t read music because he learned to sing using “shape notes.” He and Betty also sang with the St Albans Choral Society.
He worked most of his career at Union Carbide as a chemical engineer in the Institute, WV Plant.
He retired in 1992 and traveled with his wife and enjoyed eating out, especially at Diehl’s. He also did some consulting work after his first retirement.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Miriam Strobel, and wife Betty.
He is loved and survived by his daughter Leslie (Mark) Reeder, of Washington, WV and son Douglas (Lynn) Baier, of Akron, OH, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
