Steven Michael Hartley, 74, passed away peacefully to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, October 30th. Steve lived a vibrant, blessed life dedicated to pedaling down bike paths, exploring the world through a camera lens, and lifting up everyone around him. He leaves behind a legacy of selfless service, generosity, and beautiful memories.
Born in St. Albans, WV, to Joseph and Charlene Hartley, Steven spent his 74 years making the best of every single day. He was a man who truly understood that life is a beautiful ride—a practice he lived out quite literally. An avid cyclist, Steven could often be found riding around town and country roads, feeling the wind on his face and praising his Savior.
When he wasn’t on two wheels, he had a camera in his hand. As a passionate amateur photographer, Steven had a gift for capturing God’s beauty in the ordinary. Through his lens, he captured nature's vibrant colors, the quiet moments of daily life, and, above all, the joyful smiles of the family and friends he loved. His photographs will remain a treasured window into how he saw the world: bright, beautiful, and full of love.
But the true heartbeat of Steven’s life was his passion for serving others. He possessed a generous, boundless spirit and was deeply committed to his family and church. Steve loved to cook, and he cherished family dinner gatherings, making people feel right at home. He especially loved to fix breakfast pancakes and waffles for Ryker and Raelyn. Steven was a familiar face at Teays Valley Baptist Church, where he enjoyed volunteering at the food pantry. He also served as an usher, passing the plate with his signature bow tie and warm, sweet smile. He never hesitated to lend a hand, share a kind word, or show up for someone in need. His family and friends were the grateful beneficiaries of his big heart, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
Steve shared forty-four wonderful years of marriage to the love of his life, Lou Ann (Bailey) Hartley. Together, they built a life centered on love, adventure, and mutual support. He was a devoted husband who cared deeply about Lou Ann, his family, and friends.
He is survived by his wife, sister Sheryl Tucker (Bert Cooke), sister-in-law Kathy Stewart (James), brothers-in-law Tom Bailey (Glenva), Tim Bailey (Tracy) and a wide circle of family and friends who will miss his bright energy every day. He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Andrew Tucker.
A celebratory service to honor Steven’s life and legacy will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday, November 6th at Teays Valley Baptist Church with Dr. John Smith and Rev. Chad Estep officiating. Family and friends are invited to visitation from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Guests are encouraged to bring cards and written favorite stories of Steven, keeping his joyful spirit alive. In honor of his lifelong passion for helping others, donations may be made directly to the Teays Valley Baptist Church Food Pantry.
