Anthony John Gagliotti, an extremely well regarded and popular lifelong resident of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, passed away on March 8, 2025. He was 93 years old. Anthony (Tony) was born on October 20, 1931 (Proudly sharing the same birthdate and year of Micky Mantle despite Joe DiMaggio being his favorite player) in Ossining, NY to the late John and Agnesa (Ventrone) Gagliotti. Growing up before WWII with his deceased brothers (Thomas Depalma of Battle Creek Michigan and Guy Depalma of Peekskill and his sister Mary Coscia, also a lifelong Croton Resident, they bonded together in the family environment of the Great Depression.
Growing up on Harrison Street in Croton, a young Tony gained his Depression Era values and his lifelong friends life John Manco, Tony Farano, and the late Peter Franzoso. Among those friends he earned a forever nickname of “Hoton” from his years living on the mainly Italian street in town. Tony and many of his friends became lifelong members of the Croton Volunteer Fire Department where Tony was Chief in the late 1960’s. He continued to be an active member in the department arranging well attended get togethers like big band dances, parties and shows through recent years. He also served as Secretary of his company and recently was gifted a 75th membership appreciation from his Hook and Ladder Company. For many years he continued to be involved in Ex-Chief parades and activities. Tony was a well-respected member of the department helping connect its present to its history. Tony and many of his friends also became lifelong members of the Holy Name of Mary Catholic church in Croton and was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and also helped out at church on occasion. Tony also was a member of the Lions Club and other community groups.
Tony’s first marriage was to Jiovanna Canizzaro of Pleasantville, their children are: John (Sandy), Alan, Agnes and Anthony (Donna.) Tony, a Widower, enjoyed a 40 year marriage with Helen Ubaldi formerly of Yorktown in 1971 and created a loving blended family with Helen's daughters Joan and Patricia. Grandchildren include Phillip Mendola, Denise Mendola Casey, Adam Gagliotti, Jessica Gagliotti -Richardson, Katie Gagliotti, Nicole Schauffel, Jeanine Schauffel, and Grace Gagliotti. Plus 10 great grandchildren. Tony and Helen enjoyed many vacations together with friends and family including trips to Italy where his friend village Mayor of Croton Roland Bogardus exchanged gifts with the Mayor of Crotone in Italy.
Again a widower, Tony married in 2012 to Veronica Barnes and had a memorable 12 years. Those years included a trip to Italy with his wife, sons Alan and Anthony (Donna) and grandchild Grace. Tony continued to be known around the village as a sharp and colorful dresser always dressed up to exceed the occasion. For a New York Times restaurant review of local Restaurant Fino’s Tony and Ronnie are dressed up as usual in the article's photo.
Tony a hard worker throughout his career, worked a variety of jobs including at IBM before he began to work for the Village of Croton. As a Village employee Tony worked in several different capacities until he became both the Assessor and Code Enforcer working with the Village Engineer. In retirement as he put it, he” dabbled in real estate” for a few years until he decided to fully retire and be a full fledged “snowbird” visiting Florida yearly for a number of years as a resident and later yearly trips to visit his son and family in Tampa.
Tony loved people, tinkering in the garage, a good glass of wine and going out to dinner to chat with family and friends. Tony was also known for his cheesecake which was so good a local restaurant wanted him to produce the cakes for them. Truly a life well lived.
