

Don dedicated his career to the field of informal science education, working at two premier institutions in New York City, for a short time at the New York Botanical Garden and at the Bronx Zoo where he spent the main part of his professional life. Don was a tireless advocate for quality science learning for all people with one of his goals being to encourage as many young people as possible to pursue careers in science. One of Don’s key accomplishments was the creation of a The Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation, the first public school of its kind in NYC whose theme is conservation. As Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Education Department, he created a culture of innovation and thoughtful conservation education programming at the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, New York Aquarium, Queens Zoo, and Prospect Park Zoo.
Don is survived by his sons Alex and John Lisowy and their mother Susan Riordan, partner Annie McGinn, sisters Alice Mary Armstrong and Kathy Furnari, brother in law Lenny Furnari, as well as by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 18th from 2-4 & 7-9PM at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand St., Croton on Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 19th, 10AM at Holy Name of Mary Church, Croton on Hudson, NY with burial to follow at Bethel Cemetery also in Croton.
