Doris M. Mennone

Doris Mary Mennone, 94, passed away on March 20 at her home in Valhalla, New York. She was born on April 23, 1923 in Manchester, Michigan to Oliver Wendell Edwards and Alma Edwards, she was their first child. Doris grew up in Michigan, with time spent in Detroit, and Manchester. She graduated from Mackenzie High School in 1941 six months before World War 2 began. After high school Doris attended Wayne State University and received her BA in English in 1945. While attending Wayne State Doris worked full time at Sears. After 1948 she was accepted to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for a Master’s program in English Literature. She earned her MA and met her future husband Angelo. Doris worked for the Adoption/Family Services of Westchester where she placed children from the USA and abroad with local families. This was considered by her to be the culmination of her very successful career in social work. A docent at Van Cortlandt Manor, founder at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Briarcliff, Croton and Ossining, a volunteer at the Croton Public Library, member of the Interfaith Council, volunteer at the Croton Shakespeare Festival, active in the League of Woman Voters and the Croton Historical Society, marching for human rights, an end to war, and for the environment, Doris celebrated humanity by being a contributor. Doris married Angelo Mennone on October 29, 1949 in Detroit Michigan at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit. They were happily married for 59 years, and made many trips exploring Europe. Angelo, an accomplished engineer with many patents worked at GM, RCA and ended his career at IBM. This led the family to live in Michigan New Jersey and finally their much loved Croton-on-Hudson where they became true New Yorkers. Doris is survived by her sister Helen Shernit and her children; Kate Reilly of Brooklyn and her husband Thomas J. and their son Thomas. Also Christopher and his wife Jean of Maryland, their children Michelle Mazzarella (husband Jerry) and Sarah Chiriaco (husband Danny) and Sarah and Danny’s new baby Madeline. A memorial service at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Briarcliff, Croton and Ossining will be held at a future date to be announced. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Wayne State University Endowment Fund

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Doris Mennone. I have so many happy memories of visiting her home in Croton. She and Angelo were always so gracious and welcoming. She will be missed, and my heart goes out to Kate and Chris and her entire extended family.

Aunt Doris was so special - always gracious, always fun! I once spent a day with her in the city, and had such a good time. I will miss her, but am thankful that she was part of my family & my life.
