We are sad to announce the passing of George J. Oppitz, from Croton-on-Hudson, NY. George passed away peacefully at age 97 on October 20, 2023. He was born on February 11, 1926 in Pfriemd, Bavaria Germany to the late Joseph and Helen (Lang) Oppitz. His family moved to Buffalo, NY when he was 6 months old. He graduated from Amherst Central High School in 1944.
George saw service in Germany during WWII as part of the US Army 9th Infantry Division from 1944-1946. From 1956 -1984, he was a religious brother at the Atonement Friars Graymoor in Garrison, NY where he took the name of Brother Boniface. He worked at the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in Ossining, NY in maintenance and as a security guard until he retired.
He is survived by his loving wife Loretta, stepchildren Loretta Reilly and Matthew Reilly, grandchildren Jenna (Reilly) Dinali, Ryan Chan, Ethan Chan and Dylan Chan, nieces Janice Kay, Teresa Tirabassi, and Janet Price, sister-in-law Martha Oppitz, great nephews Michael Galyen, Jason Burnet and John Arkeder and great niece Jennifer Ailshie. George had two brothers and a sister: the late John Oppitz, the late Joseph Oppitz, and the late Margaret Manai. His late nephews John and Howard Galyen pre-deceased him.
George was a loving, kind, sweet, patient, shy and humble man who loved his family, God and his country. He enjoyed watching his beloved Buffalo Bills play football, solving crossword puzzles, bowling and spending time with his grandchildren. He touched the hearts of everyone that knew him, and he will be missed by all.
Visitation will be at Carter’s Funeral Home, 41 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 4pm – 8pm. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Name of Mary Church, 114 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY on October 26, 2023 at 10am. Burial will follow at the Assumption Cemetery at 1055 Oregon Road, Cortlandt, NY.
