John T. Calvert, a resident of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, passed away on February 16, 2026. He was 84 years old. John was born on January 11, 1942 in the Bronx, NY to the late Thomas E. and Theresa (Cofield) Calvert. John served in the United States Army twice from 1959-1962 and 1966-1969. Before his retirement, he was a Police Officer with the Westchester County Police Department in Hawthorne, NY.
John spent a lifetime in the service of his country, serving in the United States Army for two separate enlistments. After leaving the Army for the first time in 1962, he was hired as an Officer with the New York City Police Department, assigned to the 46th Precinct in the Bronx. John re-enlisted in the Army in 1966 responding to a sense of duty during the Vietnam War. He was trained as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Specialist and was sent to overseas duty in South Korea. Upon his final discharge from the Army in 1969, he found a temporary security job as a “Peace Cop” with the organizers of an outdoor music festival in Woodstock, NY. He returned to “the job” in 1971 as an Investigator with the Westchester County Sheriffs’ Department and ultimately retired as a Lieutenant with the Westchester County Police Department. He served in various roles as a Desk Officer to a Detective Squad Supervisor and the Commanding Officer of the Police Academy. After his retirement in 1990, John worked as the Financial Aid Officer for Pace University, spent a small time with a custom picture framing business and eventually drove special needs children for the Croton Harmon School District. His calm demeanor, ultimate patience and understanding smile made him a beloved fixture for children that simply knew him as “John.” He spent his remaining years dedicated to his family.
He is survived by his brother Eugene Calvert, his three sons (Thomas, John Paul and James), his grandchildren (Caroline, Jack, Matthew, Eve, Nicole and Emilie), and his wife Hannah, whom he has loved since they were teenagers.
He was predeceased by his sister Rosemary McCarthy, and his brother Thomas Calvert.
