Michael Currane was born the 12th of October 1933 in Kilmihil, Co. Clare, Ireland. The 3rd child of 6, born to Michael Currane & May Currane née Browne. He is survived by his brother Senan (Kilmihil) and sisters Carmel Cannon (London) and Anne Taylor (Manchester) and his adoring nieces & nephews, grand nieces & nephews, sisters & brothers in law. Michael was predeceased by his sister Martha and brother Oliver. Mike will also be dearly missed by his adopted Brett Girls.
Mike grew up helping on the family farm at Cahermurphy, Clare. At a young age, Mike fell in love with Football and Hurling. He would carry this love with him to the end. He was extremely proud to have been a winning member of the 1959 Cusack Cup Championship with his Kilmihil Parish Club.
While Mike loved his native Clare, he traveled to England for work, eventually settling in New York. Through the help of the tight knit Irish community, Mike landed a job as a bus driver with the MTA, which he would hold for over 30yrs.
He married the love of his life, Mary Normoyle on October 7, 1967 and his beloved sons Bernard and David would complete his family. Mike was a proud, hardworking family man. Working as a full time MTA Bus driver and a full time Superintendent of a building in Queens, he eventually moved his family to Hastings, NY to work as a caretaker of a local Church and continue driving buses full time. After retiring from the MTA, he was not done quite yet. He went on to begin a new career as a School Bus Driver, which he would lovingly do up until his 80s! Mike and Mary moved to Croton-on-Hudson when they retired as caretakers.
Michael was a founding member of the Four Green Fields, an Irish community in upstate New York. He was instrumental in bringing the GAA games to the backfield. He was an avid sportsman, fisherman, hunter and gardener. He enjoyed every minute of his time in his country house with his family and friends. Mike loved to watch and discuss all sports, especially the GAA and the NY Rangers. He loved to call home weekly to discuss the GAA with his brother Senan and nieces and nephews.
Michael had a beautiful, long life filled with a loving family and life long friends. However, his life was not without sadness. Losing his son Bernard suddenly in 2011 was devastating for the family. Michael’s world was changed again in 2023, with the sudden loss of Mary, followed a few weeks later by the loss of his youngest son David. Mike was truly heartbroken. He was a man of extreme faith and he would often say in the last year and a half that Mary was home with her boys. We are comforted by the fact the the Currane family that we Adored are once together again ❤️
A funeral mass for Michael will be held Monday, February 17, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Christopher's Church, 3094 Albany Post Rd, Buchanan, NY 10511. Following the funeral mass will be a burial following funeral mass at 12:30 PM at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 100 Mill St, New York, NY 10579.
