Growing up, Michael was an active child who loved playing sports. As a teenager, he traveled to New England, across the US to the Rockies and to the European Alps, leading to his life-long appreciation of travel and the pleasures afforded by nature, whether in the ocean or at a lake or on a mountain slope.
Michael graduated from St. Helena’s High School and obtained his business degree from Iona College. He began his career working for Pan Am airlines. After a successful career working as a purchasing contract specialist for major corporations, Michael retired in September 2017.
Michael married the love of his life, Mary (Grealy) Murray, in 1982. They settled down in Ossining, NY in 1985, where they purchased their first home and had three children, Erin, Matthew, and John. Michael was the type of person who could help with anything and everything. He enjoyed working with his hands, often taking on projects to renew the original beauty of something needing a little TLC. Michael was an avid reader who loved history and nature, taking pleasure in maintaining his garden every summer. He was always up for a road trip to explore new areas particularly in the Hudson Valley and the North Fork of Long Island. Michael’s happy places were Lake Winnipesaukee, NH and Mecox Beach/Sag Harbor, NY where he spent time with his favorite people—his family and loved ones.
Michael was a caring, dedicated father who enjoyed having an active role in his children’s lives. Whether it was coaching, giving life advice, or just being their number one fan, he was always there. His patience and calm, reassuring nature are qualities that will be missed beyond measure.
In his retirement years, Michael enjoyed working at the Hudson Valley Pumpkin Blaze in Croton-on-Hudson, NY each autumn. His most recent and greatest enjoyment came from being Pop-Pop to three beautiful grandchildren: Christopher, Nora, and Charlotte.
Michael is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary, his children, Erin, and her husband Michael Kassas; his son Matthew, and his wife Alexis; his son John and his wife Andriana.
Additional survivors include his siblings, Patricia Murray, Joan Duffy (Raymond), Lynn Murray, George Murray III (Ellen), Lillian Amundson and many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws and dear friends.
