Peter J. Burns, 87, long time resident of the Bronx, Palenville, and of late Ossining, NY went to eternal rest on February 28, 2018. Born November 27, 1930 in New York City, Peter was the son of the late Peter J. and Catherine “Kitty” Burns. Peter leaves his wife of 64 years Mary Lou and their six children Peter (David), San Diego CA, Marianne Meenan (Kevin), Millwood NY, Elizabeth Cardiello (Thomas), Bronx NY, William, West Palm Beach FL, Matthew (Dennis), Portsmouth RI, and Paul, Palenville NY as well as his sister Mary Ann Burns of Nanuet NY. Peter also leaves behind six grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by his sister Catherine “Cappy” McCarthy. Peter served in the US Navy during the Korean War and went on to become a member of the NYPD until his retirement. During his retirement he received his Bachelor of Arts in Theology from Fordham University Rose Hill Campus. For many years Peter was an active member of the BPOE Elks Lodge #1341 in Catskill NY serving as Grand Exalted Ruler and State Representative. He spent many years working in the Public Defender’s office in Catskill. Peter was also a retired volunteer for the Ossining Public Library and a former member of the St. Augustine Church choir.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018 from 3-7pm at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand St., Croton on Hudson, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am on Monday, March 5th at St. Augustine Church, Ossining NY with burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne NY.
