Robert Opel, 81, of Croton-on-Hudson, New York, passed away peacefully, July 3, 2016 at Calvary Hospital. Robert was born in the Bronx. He worked as a cab driver in Manhattan, in sales for freight companies, and for New York State at group homes for the developmentally disabled in Westchester, a job that he maintained until his retirement at age 79. In most aspects of his finances he was thrifty, though he spared no expense when celebrating or eating out with friends and family.
An avid outdoorsman, Robert loved hiking, swimming, birding, beach-combing and fishing. He was active with the Appalachian Mountain Club and other outdoor and conservation organizations, and was leading outings well into his sixties. When hiking his pace was slow and deliberate but he always observed and appreciated the natural world along the way, and especially savored finally reaching the summit of a mountain, even if the rest of the group was itching to return to the trailhead by the time he arrived.
Robert is survived by his sons Matthew and Andrew, his daughter-in-law Tara and two grandchildren, Emma and Jackson.
The family wishes to thank Calvary Hospital for their loving care and support, and the Danish Home in Croton-on-Hudson for providing a beautiful, comfortable and caring home for Robert in his last two years.
A memorial service will be held on Friday July 15, 2016 at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church, 34 S Highland Ave, Ossining, NY 10562.
In lieu of flowers Robert's family asks that you honor his memory with a donation to the Calvary Hospital in the Bronx.
