James "Jim" Tyner

James “Jim” Tyner, beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend, passed away on September 13, 2026 after a long journey with Parkinson’s disease. Born March 16, 1949, Jim was adopted by Charles & Inez Tyner and grew up in Oak Park, Illinois.

Jim proudly enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam era, including time in Belgium working with NATO and military intelligence. He later served 20 years in the United States Navy Reserve and spent his civilian career in civil service at Glenview Naval Air Station and Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He stayed involved with veterans after his retirement, taking various leadership positions with the American Legion for over 30 years.

In 1974, Jim married Mary, his beloved wife of 51 years. Together they raised their children, Dan and Elizabeth. He especially treasured his six grandchildren: Grace, Evan, Ella, Ryan, Hannah, and Emma.

Jim found joy in simple things: music, puzzles, collecting coins and baseball cards, traveling, working on projects, Beaver Island sunsets, and spending time with family and friends. He was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. He was steady, dependable, hardworking, and always willing to show up for the people he loved.

A strong faith was instilled in Jim at an early age that would last throughout his life. He was active in church ministry and highlighted his talent while singing in church choirs. Even as Parkinson’s changed his physical abilities, his faith, humor, generosity, and love remained. Although the disease eventually took much from him, it could not take away his ability to sing.

Jim leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, quiet strength, and unconditional love. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now free from the limitations of Parkinson’s and singing once again as part of a heavenly choir.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his son, Dan (Kim) and their children Grace, Evan, Ella, Ryan; his daughter Elizabeth (Matt) and their children Hannah and Emma; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Harland & Joanne Grandy and James & Arla Horvath; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

The family would like to extend their deep appreciation and thanks to VA Hines Health Care, FirstLight Home Care, and JourneyCare Hospice for the love and care that they showed to Jim and the entire family.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at Village Church of Barrington, 1600 E Main St., Barrington, IL, followed immediately by a funeral service.
