It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerome “Jerry” Lutz Sr. on February 22, 2026. Also known as Ruggedly Handsome Jerry, he was truly one of a kind–the life of the party–whose outlook on life combined an insatiable sense of humor and an infectious, distinctive laugh with a loving understanding of how to connect when it mattered most.
Born in Barrington, IL, to the late Joseph C. Lutz Sr. and Adelaide Lutz, Jerry graduated from Crystal Lake Central High School. He was a man of many layers: a dependable businessman and owner of Crystal View Services, a skilled handyman, and a talented artist and guitar player. His acumen for performing shone through in the many episodes he co-hosted of Psychobabble and in his memorable casting call in the film Groundhog Day.
Whether he was enjoying time with family as the cool uncle, the witty jokester with a keen eye for pop culture, or the thoughtful, empathetic neighbor, Jerry’s presence was felt by all. He was well-traveled and loved nothing more than embarking on expeditions with friends and family, fueled by his passions for music, nature, and architecture. He taught us to live life to the fullest and, most importantly, to always find the humor in the journey.
Jerry was a dedicated father and a loyal friend. He is survived by his children, Jerome C. Lutz Jr. and Sabrina (Eric) Lutz; and his cherished grandchildren, Carter, Madison, and Cooper.
He is also survived by his siblings, who remained his close friends throughout his life: Lorraine (Myles) Breen, Joan (Gene) Bogner, Virginia (Rick) Summerville, Joseph C. (Nancy) Lutz Jr., James (Kathy) Lutz, John (Anne) Lutz, and Jeffrey (Nancy) Lutz.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Adelaide, as well as his beloved, great aunt, Helen (Al) Carter. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and a reminder to always “eat until it hurts and then eat a little more.”
A memorial to celebrate Jerry’s remarkable life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, Crystal Lake, IL. A private Celebration of Life with his family will be held on Father’s Day. In Jerry’s memory, we invite you to share your favorite joke or memory, play a favorite song, and be kind to those around you.
