Early in his professional career, he worked for the Crystal Lake Police Department and was their first motorcycle officer. Bill had a long history in manufacturing as a tool and die engineer with his last location at Baxter Laboratories in Round Lake, Illinois. He was a loving husband and father. He was an avid pilot, fisherman, gardener, and model airplane hobbyist. After retirement because of his love of airplanes, he spent countless hours building and flying beautifully detailed, scaled radio controlled model airplanes.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Phyllis; daughter Jan (Ed) Ueckert of Austin, Texas; son William (Rebecca) Johnson of Gilbert, Arizona; four grandchildren, Blake Knapik, Brenna Johnson, Samuel Johnson, Maxwell Johnson; one great-grandchild, Miles Knapik; and his brother Jack (Vicki) Johnson of Nisswa, Minnesota; half brother Jim (Judy) Johnson of Woodstock, Illinois, and several nieces and nephews. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a welcoming smile on his face for anyone that he met. Bill, well known for his gentle soul, shared a deep mutual love of his family and will be missed dearly. He has now taken his final flight into the loving arms of Christ.
The services will be private. Interment will be in Crystal Lake Memorial Park, Crystal Lake. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's name to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 485 W Woodstock St, Crystal Lake, IL 60014
