Robert Gene Bates, 85, of Cullman, Alabama, was born December 10, 1940, in Cullman, Alabama, and passed away October 25, 2026. He will be remembered with deep respect and lasting gratitude for a life marked by steady service, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
Robert served the people of his community as Cullman County Circuit Clerk for 30 years, carrying out his responsibilities with patience, integrity, and thoughtful care. He was also a Mason for 57 years, a faithful commitment reflected not only in longevity but in the generous work of his hands and heart—conducting and performing more than 300 Masonic services. A lifelong member of Sharon Grove Methodist Church, Robert’s faith was not merely spoken, but lived through loyalty, kindness, and a gentle, consistent presence.
Above all, Robert was a loving and devoted husband and a cherished father, grandfather, and great grandfather—a man widely regarded as one of the most wonderful men that ever walked this earth. His family knew him as brave and resilient in life’s demands, yet always tender in spirit: wise in counsel, patient in difficulty, and steadfastly kind-hearted. As a beloved grandfather and great-grandfather, he was cherished for the calm strength and devoted love that anchored generations.
Robert found honest joy in the outdoors and in the work of the land. Whether hunting, fishing, or farming, he carried the same hard-working dedication and quiet thoughtfulness that defined every part of his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Janice Bates; daughters, Cindy (Bobby) McSwain and Becky (Hayden) Faulk; grandchildren, Brooke (Bill) Berg and Brittany (Whitney) Tucker; great grandchildren, Olivia Yancy, Audrey Tucker, Caroline Berg, Anna Kate Berg, and William Berg; and brother, Frank Bates of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, William “Bill” Bates, Grady Bates, Jack Bates, Thad Bates, and Terry Bates; his sisters, Myrtle Hendrix, Dorothy Hancock, and Viva Johnson; and his parents, Robert Lem and Mamie Pearl Trimble Bates.
Rev. Paul Campbell and Rev. Delbert Freeman will be officiating.
“What we do for ourselves alone stays with us, but what we do for others lives on and on.” In that enduring truth, Robert’s legacy remains—beloved, faithful, and deeply cherished.
