Robert C Self, 82, of Cullman, Alabama, passed away on October 30, 2026. Born January 5, 1944, Robert lived a life marked by steady resilience, thoughtful kindness, and a gentle generosity that made him deeply beloved and cherished by those who knew him. In the quiet ways he showed up for others—and in the humor he carried with him—Robert left an enduring imprint on his family and friends.
Robert graduated from Pine Hill High School in 1962 and went on to graduate from Livingston College in 1966, carrying forward a practical intelligence and a grounded approach to life that served him well in the years that followed.
His first job was at Mitchell Motor Cars in Cullman, a fitting start for someone who truly loved cars. Robert later began his career with the Department of Human Services, where he worked faithfully until retirement. In the years after retiring, he found real enjoyment in antique auctions—a passion that suited his curiosity and appreciation for the stories held in well-worn treasures. He also spent time traveling with his cousin, Carole, and he devoted himself wholeheartedly to his beloved dogs, who were family to him.
A man of simple joys and lasting devotion, Robert loved fishing and boating, and as the years went on, his fondness for auctions became a special part of his everyday life. Those who shared time with him will remember not only what he did, but how he did it—with a gentle spirit, a generous heart, and a humor that could brighten a room. He will be remembered by the love he gave, the things he taught, and the little moments that were uniquely his. He loved being a granddad and telling stories from when he was younger, offering warmth, laughter, and steady presence in the lives of those he loved.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Waldo Self and Mary Grace Cupp Self; and his brother, Victor Marion Self. He is survived by his two children, Mary Elizabeth Self Myers (John Gutowski) and Christopher Paul Self; five grandchildren, Zachary Christopher Myers, Jake Anthony Myers, Grace (Josh) Landrum, Jackson Paul Self, and Aubrey Diane Self; great niece Malana Adea Champlin; and a host of cousins.
The family extends special thanks to his best friend and cousin Carole Lee Cole for always being there for him and his family.
Visitation will be held at Moss-Service Funeral Home, 1901 2nd Ave North West, Cullman, AL 350555827, on November 7, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Robert’s favorite words, offered with both faith and a familiar, wry warmth, were: “The Good Lord willing and the Creek don't rise.”
